Most movies depict vampires as highly intelligent and sophisticated creatures, but What We Do in the Shadows goes another way with the mythology. These are some of the most ridiculous vampires ever put on screen as well as some of the dumbest – which is what makes the show so phenomenally unique and funny.
The other characters of the show, some human and some supernatural, either add to the stupidity going on or are intelligent enough to see how foolish these creatures are. These colorful characters prove that even in the world of monsters and ghouls, some people are smart and some are clueless.
10 Shaun
With all the death and supernatural shenanigans going on at the vampires’ house, it is a wonder that no one ever notices. That is, until their neighbor Shaun is introduced, and it becomes clear he is not smart enough to pick up on even the most obvious of red flags.
Shaun likes to make small talk with his neighbors and even invites them over for parties. However, he never seems to clue in about how unusual they are or the many signs that they are actually undead vampires living next door to him.
9 Claude
There have been some great supernatural hunters in movies and television over the years, but Claude is not one of them. He leads an organization of vampire hunters which Guillermo accidentally joins.
Though Claude talks as if he knows what he’s doing, when his vampire skills are put into action, his incompetence is obvious. He takes his team to invade a suspected vampire house in the middle of the night which is obviously the worst time to attack vampires. His ill-prepared plan ends in disaster, including the death of one of his colleagues.
8 Jeff
Jeff is a human who was apparently a former lover of Nadja’s in another life. despite her insistence that he was a great warrior, Jeff is a pretty ordinary guy who works a simple job and doesn’t seem very bright.
He is another character who has to ignore a lot of the weirdness going on around him to not realize he is talking to vampires. He just follows Nadja around like a lost puppy. Even when his old memories return, he continues to prove himself a fool by immediately getting himself decapitated, which becomes one of What We Do in the Shadow’s running jokes.
7 Nandor
Nandor often feels like the least intelligent vampire of the main characters even though he would likely see it the exact opposite way. But his pompous attitude and oblivious nature make his dim-wittedness all the funnier.
He is completely disillusioned into seeing himself as an all-powerful vampire, attempting to take over Staten Island during a city council meeting and trying to pay for groceries with ancient coins. However, blaming all of his embarrassing mistakes on Guillermo shows he’s at least a bit intelligent.
6 Laszlo
Much like Nandor, Laszlo is a vampire whose confidence is misplaced. He sees himself as much more impressive and cleverer than he actually is and doesn’t seem to notice when he is making a fool of himself.
A perfect example of how out-of-touch Laszlo can be is when he goes into hiding and adopts the persona of an ordinary human that is very transparent. It is possible that Laszlo has the ability to be more intelligent, however, most of his time seems to be preoccupied with thinking about sex.
5 Jenna
Jenna is a LARP enthusiast who is turned into a vampire in the first season of the series. Though she seems like a pretty level-headed and intelligent university student, it does take her an unusually long time to understand the situation she is in.
To be fair to Jenna, coming to the conclusion that one is a vampire would not be the first thought for many people. But she also willingly let Nadja bite her neck then drank some blood that was offered to her. There were definitely signs she could have picked up on.
4 Baron Afanas
The overarching storyline in the first season of the show involves a master vampire named Baron Afanas coming to visit the vampires in Staten Island. Unlike the others, Afanas comes off as the creepiest creature on What We Do in the Shadows who is disgusted by the incompetence of his underlings.
However, when he awakens from his slumber and wants to go out on the town, he shows he can be as mindless as the others. Despite being impressive at first, Afanas ends up killing himself in a drunken accident.
3 Colin
Colin Robinson is a hilarious new take on the traditional vampire. As an energy vampire, he drains his victims through mundane conversations and awkward social encounters. He also keeps finding new ways to drain people’s energy, like in the comment section online.
There are times Colin does stupid things, like getting sucked into an internet fight with a literal troll. However, he generally seems to be really clever with how he can manipulate others for his own needs.
2 Nadja
Nadja has many of the same problems the other vampires in her house have. She can be self-centered and dramatic at times, but she also seems to have a better grasp on reality than the male vampires.
Nadja seems to be the one who is always pointing out how foolish their plans are or getting annoyed with the immaturity of the others. When Laszlo and Nandor are captured by witches, it is Nadja who must come to their rescue.
1 Guillermo
Guillermo is probably the most likable character on What We Do in the Shadows. Despite the fact that Nandor clearly has no intentions of turning him into a vampire, Guillermo continues to work tirelessly for him.
However, Guillermo often serves as the audience surrogate, not only introducing viewers to the world of modern vampires but also pointing out how stupid these vampires can be. He can be gullible at times, but his path as a vampire hunter also shows he is more capable than anyone gives him credit for.
