What Zemo Is The Baron Of

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Why is Zemo referred to as ‘Baron’ in Marvel’s Falcon & The Winter Soldier? Helmut Zemo is back in the MCU, making his series debut in Falcon & The Winter Soldier episode 3, ‘The Power Broker’. In the episode, Bucky Barnes breaks Zemo out of prison, as he’s agreed to assist the former Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson’s Falcon in their efforts to stop the new wave of Super Soldiers that have emerged known as the Flag-Smashers. Traveling to the corrupt hive of crime known as Madripoor, it’s revealed that Helmut Zemo is a baron, referencing the character’s origins and family history from the comics.

In the Marvel Comics continuity, Helmut Zemo is more commonly known as Baron Zemo, hailing from a long line of barony over Zeulniz, Germany that’s existed for 13 generations. Helmut’s father Heinrich worked alongside Hydra and the Nazis during WWII, though he existed as a strong rival to the Red Skull and Baron Strucker for control of the villainous organization. Additionally, Heinrich Zemo used much of his power and resources as Baron to fight Captain America, becoming a longtime foe until his death in one of their conflicts. This would motivate Helmut to carry on his father’s legacy as the new Baron Zemo, donning a copy of his father’s purple mask, creating teams such as a new Masters of Evil team (like Heinrich once did), vying for control over Hydra, and also leading iterations of the Thunderbolts squad to pursue his own agenda.

Likewise, Falcon & the Winter Soldier has done a soft retcon for the MCU version of Zemo played by Daniel Brühl, revealing that Helmut has always had his “Baron” title, and he also dons the iconic purple mask in the episode as well. According to Helmut, the Zemo family were royalty and members of the Sokovian aristocracy before the nation was destroyed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Additionally, it was revealed in Captain America: Civil War that Zemo’s father died alongside his wife and son during the chaos. While his father was unnamed, it’s likely that this was indeed Heinrich. Either way, his family’s deaths kickstarted Zemo’s crusade to topple the Avengers as an incredibly complex villain in the MCU.

Despite Zemo being ‘Baron Zemo’ all this time, it seems as though Helmut wasn’t content to live the luxurious life of the wealthy. The origins provided in Civil War revealed that Zemo was a colonel in the Sokovian Armed Forces and lead a paramilitary death squad known as EKO Scorpion. Apparently, Zemo was keen to join the armed forces despite his status as a Baron-to-be after his father. Additionally, Zemo revealed in Falcon & The Winter Soldier that he had spent years hunting down people Hydra recruited to recreate the super-soldier serum, making it pretty clear that his motivations regarding the organization are essentially the opposite of his comics counterpart, despite their shared hatred of the Avengers.

In any case, it doesn’t seem as though Zemo’s new ‘Baron’ title and retcon take away anything from his original MCU origins, as it’s simply just a newly added facet to his character that aligns him a little more with the comics. As Falcon & The Winter Solider continues, it will be interesting to see if the MCU Baron Zemo reveals any more information to bring him even closer to the original Marvel Comics version.
