Whatever Happened To Pokémon Delta Emerald

Nintendo once trademarked the name “Delta Emerald” in Japan, suggesting that a remake of Pokémon Emerald was on the cards at one point. Both Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire received remakes on the Nintendo 3DS, but there has yet to be a remake of Pokémon Emerald.

The Pokémon Company has gradually been releasing remakes of older Pokémon games on new systems, with the next ones being Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl for Nintendo Switch. The Gen III games received remakes on the Nintendo 3DS, in the form of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. These games added new elements from the then-current Pokémon titles, like Mega Evolution and online play.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire added a Delta Episode at the end of the story, which featured Mega Rayquaza traveling to space to fight Deoxys. This led fans to believe that this was the equivalent to content from Pokémon Emerald. A few months before Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were released, Gematsu reported that Nintendo had trademarked the name Delta Emerald in Japan. This led a lot of fans to believe that a third Hoenn remake would be released after Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. This was supported by the Battle Frontier being absent from the remakes, with a sign in the Battle Resort saying that “The Battle Frontier Project Has Started.” Pokémon Delta Emerald never saw the light of day, and the game was never officially announced by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company.

Pokémon: The Nintendo 3DS Shake-Up

It’s likely that Nintendo simply wanted to own the Delta Emerald trademark, on the off-chance that the game did see the light of day. It’s not as if bad sales from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire were responsible for killing the project, as Nintendo has confirmed that the Hoenn remakes were the fourth best-selling games on the Nintendo 3DS. There was certainly a market for another Hoenn remake game, yet the project never happened.

One possible explanation is a change in plans during the Nintendo 3DS era. The Nintendo Gigaleak confirmed that sequels for Pokémon X and Y were planned, to the point where there is origin location data in them in the games. It’s possible that The Pokémon Company had wanted to spend more time in Gen VI, especially considering the popularity of the Kalos games, as they were the second best-selling games on the 3DS. At some point, Gen VI ended and The Pokémon Company moved their focus to Gen VII and Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. It’s possible that Pokémon Delta Emerald was a casualty of this change in direction.
