Wheel of Time Showrunner Explains Authors Input On Direction Of Show

The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins reveals he clashed with the book’s author on the direction of the show. Penned by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, the series spanned 14 novels and became one of the best-selling fantasy series since J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Hailed for its detailed world, complex characters, and impeccably developed magic system, The Wheel of Time centers on Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of the all-female organization of the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a perilous mission.

In 2018, Amazon tapped into the fantasy genre when it announced it would give The Wheel of Time a series order. Helmed by Judkins, the show has been in production since 2019. Featuring a massive cast, including Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, and Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, the series is set to debut on Amazon in November. Recently, Amazon released the trailer for The Wheel of Time, which indicated that the show may be making some changes to the novels. Now, Judkins opens up about the undertaking of bringing the books to the small screen.

Speaking with Variety, Judkins reveals he encountered directional differences with the author of The Wheel of Time. Sanderson, who penned the series’ final three books, and the late author Jordan’s wife, Harriet, were available as resources to Judkins in the adaptation process. However, Judkins admits that he and Sanderson didn’t always find common ground when it came to bringing The Wheel of Time to life. Read what Judkins said about clashing with Sanderson below:

Brandon is super honest, saying, ‘I don’t think this works, for this reason,’ and then I’m like ‘OK I have to pay serious attention to this.’ And then there have been times to where I’m like, ‘No, this is why we’re doing it. It’s a choice and I actually think it really works and it’s going to work for us long-term.’ And then we agree to disagree on it.

Of course, adapting The Wheel of Time to the small screen is no easy feat, but Judkins continues to ensure that the show adheres to the important details from the novel. While Sanderson and Judkins may have some creative differences, the show could last for years to come, and The Wheel of Time season 2 could end up taking a different direction than season 1. Recently, Judkins revealed that he asked Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for advice, which showed that he understands the importance of the series to the fantasy world.

For decades, The Wheel of Time has resonated with readers for its endlessly fascinating world, intricate weaponry, and powerful women at its core. For now, the anticipation for The Wheel of Time continues to grow. Hard at work for over two years, Judkins appears adamant about ensuring that the series remains true to the novels while appealing to newcomers. Those familiar with the novels, as well as those eager to diver into a new fantasy series, have a lot to look forward to when Amazon premieres The Wheel of Time on November 19.
