Wheel Of Time Whos Liandrins Man In Northharbor (Hes Not In The Books)

This article contains spoilers for Wheel of Time episode 6.

Wheel of Time episode 6 saw Moiraine Sedai threaten to expose her colleague Liandrin’s link to man in Northharbor – a plot that isn’t in the books at all. The Aes Sedai are essentially the sorceresses of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time, a group of powerful mystics who wield the One Power – Jordan’s version of magic. Wheel of Time episode 6 explored the politics of the Aes Sedai, setting up a particularly interesting dynamic between Moiraine and Liandrin.

Moiraine is a secretive member of the Blue Ajah, who believes the Last Battle is approaching and has been questing to discover the Dragon Reborn. Liandrin, in contrast, is a member of the Red Ajah, and she’s passionately committed to stripping the magic from any man who possesses the One Power (an act called “gentling”). In the books, Liandrin is also a secret member of the Black Ajah – sorceresses who have abandoned their oaths, swearing allegiance to the Dark One. Amazon’s Wheel of Time has blended Liandrin with another character from the books, Elaida, a member of Red Ajah who seeks political power in the Aes Sedai’s White Tower. So far, all Liandrin’s actions could be put down to her political ambitions, and that’s probably all the other Aes Sedai believe them to be; but they could also be seen as a setup for Liandrin’s membership of the Black Ajah. Certainly, she knows a little too much about the Emond’s Field Five, a group the Dark One’s agents will be watching with concern and interest. But Wheel of Time episode 6 hinted at another twist in Liandrin’s tale, one that isn’t in the books at all; Moiraine threatened to expose her man in Northharbor should she get in her way, cautioning Liandrin’s Red Ajah fellows would be most displeased at the news.

Moiraine probably assumes Liandrin’s man in Northharbor is simply a lover. In reality, though, it’s likely to be a Darkfriend – a servant of the Dark One, who has brought knowledge about the Emond’s Field Five to Liandrin’s attention. Assuming the mystery man is an important character, he’s probably Padan Fain, the peddler who visited Two Rivers in Wheel of Time episode 1 and who was seen watching the Emond’s Field Five with interest. In the books, Padan Fain is a well-connected Darkfriend who became one of the main antagonists.

If this is indeed a Darkfriend, then they’re well-concealed. Liandrin’s connection to them is clearly so secret Moiraine believed she could threaten her position in Red Ajah by exposing it, even if she did seem to believe the man in Northharbor to be a secret lover. This is probably the only possibility that occurred to Moiraine, because Red Ajah don’t cultivate a spy network, and there’s been no sign any of the Aes Sedai know about the existence of Black Ajah. But the knowledge means Moiraine has gotten a little too close to Liandrin’s secrets for comfort – which could make her a target.

Wheel of Time episode 6 subtly set up the return of Padan Fain, because it ended with Mat Cauthon deciding to stay behind at Tar Valon rather than join the battle against the Dark One. In the books, Padan Fain stole Mat’s dagger, preventing Mat from being completely Healed; its theft marked an escalation in his threat, as the Darkfriend became a force to be reckoned with in his own right. Presumably, Amazon’s Wheel of Time will follow the same arc – and a connection between Liandrin and Padan Faid would add a further complication to the plot.
