Wheel of Time Why Stepin [SPOILER] (& What It Means For Warders)

Warning: This article contains discussion of suicide for Wheel of Time season 1, episode 5.

In The Wheel of Time season 1, episode 5, Stepin chooses to take his own life rather than remain committed to fighting for the Aes Sedai; here’s what it means for the Warders. Stepin’s decision came as a result of Kerene’s death toward Wheel of Time episode 4’s end. Similar to Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and Lan (Daniel Henney), Kerene (Clare Perkins) and Stepin (Peter Franzén) were bonded together as Aes Sedai and Warder.

Kerene dying at the hands of Logain was a shocking blow to the characters, particularly Stepin. Throughout Wheel of Time episode 5, he was comforted by several of his friends, who hoped to help him get through this hardship. He also received an offer from Alanna Mosvani (Priyanka Bose) of the Green Ajah to become the Aes Sedai’s third Warder. But just when it seemed like he might persevere and move on without Kerene, Stepin secretly used some of Nynaeve’s tea to put Lan to sleep, before stabbing himself with a dagger off-screen. The funeral scene at the end of the episode demonstrated just how much Stepin’s death will affect Lan in the episodes to come.

While emotionally devastating, however, the significance of Stepin killing himself goes far beyond the emotional impact it will have on Lan. On a personal note, Stepin lost the person he cared about most, and Stepin himself said that a world without love would be intolerable. That speaks to his reasoning, as he couldn’t stand being without Kerene. But more importantly, it was an inevitable decision and one that likely did not surprise book readers as Stepin’s fate is one that befalls all Warders, not just Stepin alone. In Wheel of Time’s world, what Stepin did is, sadly, not a far cry from the fate of a Warder who loses his Aes Sedai in the books.

Wheel of Time Why Stepin [SPOILER] (& What It Means For Warders)

In the books, Warders become lost and disillusioned after their Aes Sedai die. Typically, they perish in the pursuit of revenge against the person or monster responsible for their Aes Sedai’s death. That explains Stepin’s reckless attempt on Logain’s life in Wheel of Time episode 4. Even when Warders survive the fight that killed their Aes Sedai, their lives usually come to an end soon after. Having lost the will to live, most head off to the Great Blight in the far north to fight Trollocs until they die. They tend to cause their own deaths, but unlike the show’s Stepin, they don’t take their own lives directly in the Wheel of Time books.

Not all may die in the same manner as Stepin, but Warders who outlive their Aes Sedai are fated to meet tragic ends. Stepin’s death serves as a warning sign for all Warders, and anyone else who might intend on forming an Aes Sedai-Warder bond in The Wheel of Time. It’s something that a would-be Aes Sedai like Nynaeve (Zoé Robbins) will have to keep in mind for the future. Another character sure to be influenced by this event is Moiraine, who understands that her death would doom Lan as well. Moiraine’s comment about the possibility of the bond being passed on to another Aes Sedai seemingly sets this up as a way to save her Warder from going down the same dark path should she ever die before him.
