When Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s The Way of the Berserker DLC Unlocks

Gamers who pre-purchased Assassin’s Creed Valhalla earned a pre-order bonus mission entitled “The Way of the Berserker,” but the instructions from Ubisoft on how to access the mission were incredibly vague. Upon starting the game, players were told that the DLC had been added to their account, but that they would need to progress the story to unlock the mission. So when can players play “The Way of the Berserker?”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set during the 10th century, with gamers playing as the Viking Eivor as he or she establish a foothold in England for their people. The game so far has received fairly warm praise, though not without noting the usual bugginess that tends to come with Assassin’s Creed games. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is also notable for returning some older franchise tropes that had been missing from recent games in the series, like social stealth and a one-hit-kill Hidden Blade. It also has scaled back some of the Assassin’s Creed map clutter that had become increasingly distracting as the franchise embraced open-world mechanics.

Players who earned “The Way of the Berserker” DLC mission for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will have to wait several hours after starting the game before they’ll be able to access the mission. Players begin the game in Norway; the mission does not unlock until after players reach England. Depending on how much side content Assassin’s Creed Valhalla players pursue before leaving to the island nation, it might be between 5 and 10 hours before they arrive at the main portion of the game. Once in England, players will need to establish their home base of Ravensthorpe. Once the long house is built, players will receive a letter from a scout alerting them to a warrior in East Anglia who might be willing to join the settlement. It should be noted that while the quest log groups “The Way of the Berserker” as a Ravensthorpe mission, with a recommended power level of 20, the mission itself is actually in East Anglia, an area which has a recommended power level of 55, much higher than what players arrive in England with.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Post-Launch DLC Plans

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla players who missed out on “The Way of the Berserker” as a pre-order bonus can still purchase the mission separately for $1 on Ubisoft’s storefront, but only for PC. Console players may be out of luck for now, but they have other DLC to look forward to in the future, including free seasonal updates. The first update will arrive in December 2020 and decorate player’s villages for the annual Yule Festival. More paid expansions are planned for 2021, including one that will bring the sacking of Paris to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Ubisoft’s post-content plans for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla mirror their plans for Watch Dogs: Legion, with a mixture of free and paid content on the horizon. Unlike Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t have any extensive multiplayer modes, other than allowing players to create a Viking that can be recruited by other players and earn the original player money. Even without multiplayer, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla clearly hopes to keep players engaged for months to come, with a total of three “seasons” of content promised in the year ahead.
