When Eternals Aztecs Flashbacks Fit Into The Marvel Timeline

Eternals costume designer Sammy Sheldon Differ and costume effects supervisor Ivo Coveney have explained how flashbacks to the Aztecs will fit into the MCU timeline in the upcoming film. The newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is quickly approaching, and Eternals will be the 26th entry into the expansive collection of movies and Disney+ television shows. Though Marvel Studios did not have any theatrical releases in 2020 due to the pandemic, it has so far debuted four movies and five Disney+ shows in 2021. Phase 4 is now in full swing, and has proved to be a notable departure from the previous phases of movies, setting up new hero characters such Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the Eternals.

Eternals is directed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao. It follows a team of immortal beings who are new to the big screen, but who have been around for thousands of years in the canonical timeline. The massive cast includes Richard Madden (Ikaris), Gemma Chan (Sersi), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Barry Keoghan (Druig), Angelina Jolie (Thena), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Ma Dong-seok (Gilgamesh), and Bryan Tyree Henry (Phastos). Together, they make up the Eternals, a group of cosmic superheroes that were created by Celestials. The Eternals are then sent to Earth to defend it from the Deviants, a group of evil creatures that are almost like counterparts to the Eternals.

During Screen Rant’s visit to the Eternals set in January of 2020, Sammy Sheldon Differ and Ivo Coveney discussed the various costumes that would be in the movie. Given the film covers the Eternals’ 7,000 year lifespan, historic groups are bound to feature, and Differ confirmed when the Aztecs will feature in the wider MCU timeline. Speaking about some of the costumes created for scenes occurring well in the past, the designer said, “These are the Aztecs, this is a little scene about the Aztecs and the Spaniards within the film in 1492.”

It will no doubt be very exciting for both MCU fans and history fans to hear that Eternals will show scenes featuring Aztec communities. It has already been confirmed that the movie will take place over the course of several millennia and two seperate timelines. Additionally, the city of Babylon was also shown in the trailer, along with some of the Eternals at the front of the gate. Since the group has been around for so many years, it makes sense that audiences will get to see them at various important points in world history. It is also known that the Eternals cannot involve themselves in any events that take place on Earth unless Deviants are involved, so it will be interesting to see how their time with the Aztecs plays out.

Eternals appears as though it will be a huge step in a different direction for the MCU in Phase 4. Marvel Studios’ new focus toward cosmic and multiverse stories shows how committed it is to creating bigger and fresher experiences for audiences. The stories and characters that have been introduced in Phase 4 fit right into the MCU, while also allowing audiences to experience new types of stories. Eternals seems to be solidifying this by not only giving audiences a sci-fi movie, but an MCU look at history, too.
