When The Sims 5 Gameplay Footage Will Likely Be Shown

EA’s The Sims 4 holds the dubious honor of being one of the most stretched-out single-player games in history. The product first launched in September 2014, and is somehow still getting new content – the most recent add-ons were released in March 2021. With the right DLC in tow, players can do everything from visit Star Wars locations to cast spells to become a vampire. Even so, the game is beginning to show its age, and diehards are probably wondering when The Sims 5 will finally show – if ever.

A complicating factor is the ambitious scope of The Sims. Stripped of its more exotic DLC, the series effectively attempts to simulate daily life, including eating, playing, working, relationships, and raising children. That in itself creates any number of possibilities for a sequel, which will probably demand a new graphics engine to keep up with 2021 standards. EA will also have to decide what – if anything – to carry over from The Sims 4’s DLC into The Sims 5. While things like vampires are probably unnecessary, players might complain if they suddenly lose apartments, seasons, or added career options.

A now-deleted post on 4Chan said that the next EA Play Live will be held June 14 at 11 AM Eastern time, coinciding with 2021’s all-virtual E3, which runs June 12 through June 15. According to the International Business Times, the poster claimed that The Sims 5 will get a teaser trailer, pointing to a spring 2022 launch. Still more details could be introduced during a developer interview – something EA likes to include with its E3 streams. The Sims 5 will allegedly debut on PCs, but presumably could reach consoles soon after, mirroring the approach of its predecessor. The nature of The Sims series, after all, lends itself better to mouse and keyboard control.

EA Will Probably Make E3 – With Or Without The Sims 5

Although the source of these Sims 5 reveal rumors is questionable, it’s likely that EA will run some form of livestream during E3. The company is one of the biggest game publishers in the world, and will want to take advantage of the event for maximum exposure, especially as it aims to promote fall and holiday releases. It will also, naturally, want to siphon attention away from its competitors, which might otherwise have the spotlight all to themselves.

Features of The Sims 5 are still up in the air. EA CEO Andrew Wilson has previously hinted at online social interaction and competition in The Sims 5, which would be an obvious extension of the interactions players have outside the game. It will have to avoid the problems that plagued The Sims Online, which cost $9.99 per month but sometimes saw players focused on gaining skills and in-game currency over actually socializing or indulging their imaginations. Creativity is the chief draw of the series, and The Sims 5 should definitely have that in mind as its main focus moving forward.
