Where to Find Machine Oil in Nier Replicant (& What It’s For)

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is an odd game in many ways. First off, there is its name. Then there is the fact that this game is an updated version of the Japanese-specific release of a decade-old PlayStation 3 title. That, in itself, isn’t odd, but the game itself is a spin-off of a secret (joke) ending in the Drakengard series, and is a part of a multi-game sci-fi/fantasy universe directed by gonzo game developer Yoko Taro. There are robots! There are talking books! There are dragons! That might sound like a lot to wade into for new players!

Nevertheless, for folks who missed the blockbusting hit sequel, Nier: Automata, this remake of Nier Replicant is a wonderful game full of humanity in all its odd glory. New and veteran players alike will find all the same story quirks and heartfelt characters, but with a revamped combat system that is much closer to the pristine action found in its sequel. Yet there is still some arcana to wade through, and the game doesn’t explain everything. One item that players might be looking for is Machine Oil, which can be hard to find. Here is how to get some, and what it does.

Where to farm Machine Oil in Nier Replicant Remaster

To collect this rare item, players will have to head on over to the Junk Heap, the place where Gideon and Jakob (the brothers who can upgrade weapons) are initially found early in the game. Once inside that area, head to the factory. In that dungeon, players will be able to fight flying robot enemies, which will sometimes drop Machine Oil once defeated. This is the only enemy in the game who might drop Machine Oil. They spawn most prevalently in areas 1F and B2, so head there and get cracking! To get the enemies to respawn while farming, simply leave and re-enter the factory. Players will probably have to do so multiple times, as these robots drop less valuable trinkets like Broken Batteries far more often. Machine Oil is an especially rare drop, but players can increase their chances of getting Machine Oil by equipping the appropriate Word-Edits. Mah, Mahza, and Mahzarr all increase item drop rates. Make sure to attach these Word-Edits to both weapons and magical abilities to increase chances to get Machine Oil to drop.

Machine Oil can be used for weapon upgrade paths and is a required item to complete the quest, “The Damaged Map.” Completing this quest will earn players the Labyrinth’s Shout. Not only is this weapon a powerful spear, but collecting all the weapons in the game is necessary to unlock all the endings in the game. It’s a bit of work, but well worth it in the end.
