Here’s where musical fans can watch Elijah Kelley’s The Wiz Live! online, including whether the TV special is available to stream via Netflix, Hulu or Prime. Little did American author L. Frank Baum know when he penned The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz that the children’s book would become one of the most enduring classics of the 20th century and beyond, inspiring numerous film, TV and stage adaptations for generations to come. The most famous adaptation is of course MGM’s 1939 Technicolor musical fantasy The Wizard Of Oz.

Directed by Victor Fleming and starring Judy Garland, The Wizard Of Oz is still hailed as one of the greatest films of all time more than 80 years after it first came out. Baum’s book also inspired William F. Brown and Charlie Smalls’ 1974 stage musical The Wiz – a modern retelling of The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz that featured an all-black cast and won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Both Baum’s book and the musical inspired The Wiz, a 1978 movie musical that follows a Harlem schoolteacher named Dorothy Gale who is transported to a version of Oz that looks like a fairy tale take on New York. The film starred Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow and Diana Ross as Dorothy and while it was neither a critical nor commercial success, it’s since become a cult classic.

The Wiz Live! is one of the more recent Wizard Of Oz-inspired works. It’s a live performance TV special helmed by Broadway director Kenny Leon and choreographer-turned-director Matthew Diamond that combines elements of both the 1974 musical and its 1978 movie adaptation and first aired on NBC in early December 2015. The Wiz Live! cast features talents including Shanice Williams as Dorothy and Queen Latifah as The Wiz, while the Scarecrow is played by Elijah Kelley who co-wrote the TV special’s original song “We Got It” alongside fellow star Ne-Yo who plays the Tin-Man. The TV musical received rave reviews, but where is The Wiz Live! available to watch online?

Unfortunately, The Wiz Live! musical isn’t currently in Netflix or Hulu’s library – nor is it available to watch with NBC’s own streaming service Peacock, funnily enough. However, the musical is available to rent or buy with Amazon Prime but that option is currently only open to UK subscribers. The Wiz Live! is also available to rent or buy via Google Play, YouTube and Vudu.

Though L. Frank Baum’s novel has been adapted many times and inspired numerous works like The Wiz Live!, a couple of unconventional planned adaptations of The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz haven’t come to fruition. In the late 1960s, cult filmmaker John Waters planned to turn his lifelong love of The Wizard Of Oz into a pot-infused film titled Dorothy, The Kansas City Pothead but the project failed to get off the ground. More recently, comic book writer Todd McFarlane intended to direct a gritty take on The Wizard Of Oz inspired by his Twisted Land Of Oz toyline, but unfortunately, that too has yet to materialize.
