When Oz premiered in 1997, it kicked off six seasons of watching inmates sneaking glass into an enemy’s food or blatantly killing someone who cut the shower line. The characters on this show that explored the other side of the criminal justice equation pulled no punches.

The setting for the series is “Emerald City,” a unit in Oswald Maximum Security Penitentiary where rehabilitation is the name of the game. But incarceration does things to people. Some tried to better themselves, but most just found ways to game the system to get through the day. Yet even the worst offenders had a way of winning over viewers.
