Who Are The Green Lantern Corps DCs Cosmic Police Force Explained

In an ever-changing universe full of mysteries and sprawling conflicts that stretch multiple galaxies and beyond, the Green Lantern Corps preside over nearly every inch of the cosmos to serve and protect all sentient beings regardless of personal beliefs or creed. These celestial police officers known as Green Lanterns constantly put their lives on the line when called for and uphold the laws of the universe with a green ring of power fueled by their indomitable will and drive to see their mission completed.

But who are the Green Lanterns exactly, and how have they become the protectors of a universe that sometimes seem far too large for any one group to maintain, let alone police? Furthermore, how did this cosmic force of green light become what they are today, and most importantly, who are their alien leaders that command from on high with a power that rivals that of their own recruits?

The Origins of The Green Lantern Corps

Who Are The Green Lantern Corps DCs Cosmic Police Force Explained

Billions of years ago, a group of alien beings known as the Guardians of the Universe settled on a planet known as Oa. Realizing in their infinite wisdom and longevity as a species that the natural chaos and inevitable conflict of an ever-growing universe needed some sort of balance and order, they took it upon themselves to create an artificial and emotionally devoid army of robots called Manhunters to do their bidding and keep the cosmos safe. Being controlled and programmed by the Guardians themselves, the Manhunters carried out their mission in earnest and served the Guardians loyally until one fateful day it all came crashing down.

After a glitch in their system later revealed to be intentional sabotage by Krona, one of the Guardians’ own, led the Manhunters to massacre a distant sector of space and murder untold billions (and also sowing the seeds of Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns in the process), the Guardians fought a millennia-long war to defeat and banish their crazed creations for good. Learning from this horrid calamity, the Guardians decided that their next attempt at making an intergalactic police force would need to consist of living beings from all across the cosmos, ones with the ability to think for themselves, exert free will, and most importantly, adhere to a strong moral code that befitted the ideals and logic of the Guardians themselves. So, after crafting a green ring of unfathomable power that allowed its users to harness their willpower and create energy constructs limited only by their imagination, the Guardians were finally successful in sparking a new kind of light in the universe that would only shine brighter and grow stronger as their newly christened Green Lantern Corps flourished over the next few millennia.

The Guardians of the Universe, The Leaders of The Green Lanterns Explained

Who Are The Green Lantern Corps DCs Cosmic Police Force Explained

Originally hailing from the overpopulated world of Maltus, the alien beings eventually known as the Guardians of the Universe came from humble beginnings. Quite possibly the first intelligent life forms in the universe, these Maltusians developed a society that thrived on thinkers and scientists who would stop at nothing to learn more about the cosmos and the secrets hidden within. Basically immortal and super intelligent to boot, one Maltusian in particular named Krona (the same being who instigated the eventual Manhunter glitch), obsessed with knowledge and the idea of witnessing the birth of the universe, took it upon himself to craft a machine that would allow him to do just that.

Successful in his attempt at viewing the beginning of all things, Krona’s machine inexplicably exploded, giving life to a sprawling multiverse, an evil anti-matter universe, and tangentially forcing his species to reevaluate their outlook on the cosmos. Split due to their varying beliefs in how to move forward, a female group of Maltusians eventually known as Zamarons, creators of the Star Sapphire Corps, and the Controllers, a more radical take on the Maltusians that eventually founded the Darkstars, left Maltus to fend for themselves. Following in their now ex-friends and loved ones’ footsteps, another group of Maltusians decided to travel to the center of the universe to a planet called Oa and set up shop with a new mission and a new moniker to go with it: the Guardians of the Universe were officially born.

The Unbreakable Power of Will

After creating a Central Power Battery to harness the power of what they originally dubbed “The Glow”, or the collective willpower of all beings in the universe, the Guardians crafted a power ring to serve as a conduit and tool to help wield the green light in the most effective way possible. Serving as the main weapon of the budding Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians sought out the best of the best to carry out their mission across the stars, careful not to repeat the travesty that were the Manhunters. Complete with the staple powers of flight, a protective green aura, and the ability to create energy constructs by thought alone, the Green Lanterns quickly became the shining beacon of law and order around the universe and a successful addition to the battle against evil.

But not everything about the Green Lanterns was perfect from the start. Being able to exert the power of will at a moments notice is a tough feat to achieve, especially in the face of adversity and the insurmountable odds that Lanterns face every day, and for a time, the Green Lantern’s greatest weakness stemmed from their ability to feel great fear, an emotion dominated by the yellow light of the Sinestro Corps. Dubbed the “yellow impurity” due to the imprisonment of the fear-based entity of Parallax inside the Central Power Battery on Oa, a Green Lantern’s force of will was not always enough to effectively fight against the yellow light unless they themselves could overcome their fear and fight through their shortcomings. Eventually, the impurity became the stuff of legends, but it is said that if the unbreakable power of a Green Lantern’s will should ever falter, fear can wiggle its way back into their minds and render their power rings useless.

The Earth Lanterns of Sector 2814

Broken up into 3600 distinct sectors of space with more than 7200 Lanterns enlisted to the cause, the Guardians of the Universe split up the cosmos to more effectively use their resources and help those in need. And while any given sector has a pairing of Green Lanterns from nearby solar systems to patrol and protect it from any number of sticky situations, its Sector 2814, or the sector of space that holds the planet Earth, that takes the cake for the most Lanterns in a sector. Totaling six Lanterns and counting, these Earth-based heroes are some of the most important and iconic Lanterns to have ever wielded a power ring.

Starting with the most recognizable Lantern of the bunch, Hal Jordan was the first Earth-based Green Lantern who kick-started it all after an alien named Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth and gifted Jordan his ring with his dying breath. Followed by the hotheaded Guy Gardner, the architect turned military hero John Stewart, and the Torchbearer and artist Kyle Rayner, the sheer amount of will power concentrated on Earth was clearly hard for the Guardians to ignore, and after years of there being no new Earth-based Lantern, two more additions to the Green Lantern roster arrived in Simon Baz and the anxiety-riddled Jessica Cruz. Over and over again, each of these Lanterns has proven that Earth is a perfect breeding ground for individuals full of will and the ability to overcome great fear, so don’t be surprised if another Lantern pops up in this sector before long.

With so many Green Lanterns running around the universe and more reporting for duty every day, the Green Lantern Corps is a cosmic police force known for its commitment to the cause and devotion to their little blue alien bosses known as the Guardians of the Universe. And while there is a handful of other Corps of the Emotional Spectrum competing for the top spot in protecting the universe at large (or destroying it), its these intergalactic space cops that have stood the test of time as the first and most important Corps in all of DC Comics’ continuity.
