Who Is Batwomans Mysterious Villain In The Season 3 Finale

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 3, Episode 13, “We Having Fun Yet?,” which aired Wednesday, March 2, on The CW.

Season 3 of Batwoman recently came to an end by resolving all of the major storylines, leaving the bat-themed vigilante and her team members on a positive note. However, the last few moments of the show also teased that there might be more terrors coming to Gotham City than Batwoman thought.

During the Season 3 finale, Ryan Wilder and her team are running against the clock to stop the nefarious plans of her brother, Marquis, Gotham’s new Joker. Marquis is planning to enact the plan that was first orchestrated by Arrowverse’s original Joker, with whom Marquis shares a past. His plan is to destroy most of Gotham and kill many of its citizens through a mix of explosives and Joker’s acid that are carried above the city aboard Batman’s stolen blimp. While Batwoman is successful in taking out Marquis, Batwing, Sophie and Mary are trying to figure out how to deal with the explosives set to detonate. With only a couple of minutes left and not being able to stop the timer, the Bat team decides to take the blimp as far from civilians as possible, into the city’s most desolate area, where the blimp finally explodes. While viewers don’t get to see the aftermath of the explosion right away, it is the episode’s final moments that showcase the truly grim repercussions of the blast.

While Ryan was seemingly able to cure her psychotic brother (unlike the character Marquis is inspired by), she wasn’t able to save reporter Dana Dewitt, who was at the now-toxic area of the explosion, from a seemingly monstrous figure that emerged from the wreckage. The creature that killed Dewitt appeared to be almost zombie-like, with the bones of its limbs completely exposed. While its identity was not revealed, its undead appearance might point towards DC’s most famous zombie character, Solomon Grundy.

In the comics, Solomon Grundy is a murder victim that was brought back to life through mysterious means with no memories of his old life and a diminished intellect. During Season 2 of Arrow, a character by the name Cyrus Gold, Grundy’s real name in some stories, appeared as a super-powered henchman. Batwoman might attempt to readapt the character, this time being more faithful to the original comic book version. If this is indeed Solomon Grundy, Batwoman will need a lot more help to defeat the extremely powerful villain.

Another possibility is that the creature actually is the radioactive foe known as, Doctor Phosphorus. Dr. Alexander Sartorius was a nuclear physicist that was transformed to Doctor Phosphorus after an accident at the power plant he was working at, which left his skeleton visible through his irradiated skin. Phosphorus is also the inspiration behind the Batman Beyond villain, Blight. The fact that the figure emerged in a radioactive location could indicate that Phosphorus is indeed the identity of the terrifying new foe.

Moreover, another skeleton-like villain with strong ties to Batwoman is Mister Bones. Bones is mainly associated with being the Director of the Department of Extranormal Operations, who blackmailed Kate Kane into uncovering Batman’s real identity by holding her twin sister, Alice, hostage. He also believed that he was Jacob Kane’s illegitimate child, thus making him Kate’s half-brother. Bones’ metahuman powers cause his flesh and organs to be transparent, exposing his skeleton. Moreover, his skin is toxic t0 anyone that touches him. Bones also meets the description of the deadly figure from the show, but his connection to Batwoman in the comics might make him the most likely candidate.

While a Season 4 renewal has not been announced yet by The CW, this hasn’t kept fans from theorizing about the new foe’s identity. Regardless if viewers will ever find out the mysterious figure’s name, they can next see Batwoman in Arrowverse’s new comic book crossover event, Earth-Prime.
