Who Is Cobb Vanth Mandalorian Season 2s Boba Fett Sheriff Explained

Who is Cobb Vanth, the mysterious character Timothy Olyphant will reportedly be portraying in The Mandalorian season 2? After an extremely well-received debut on Disney+, The Mandalorian season 2 will be adding a host of new players to the board, some of whom Star Wars fans are already very familiar with. Rosario Dawson will be playing live-action Ahsoka Tano, while Katee Sackhoff has been cast as Bo-Katan Kryze. Both characters previously appeared in Star Wars’ animated productions. The new additions to The Mandalorian season 2 go on, with Temuera Morrison, widely known for playing Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, returning to the franchise as his on-screen son, Boba.

Combine that with the ongoing mysteries of Mandalore, Baby Yoda and the Darksaber, and there’s certainly no shortage of material for The Mandalorian season 2 to delve into. Nevertheless, another existing Star Wars character, albeit a significantly less prominent one, has been added to the ever-expanding cast. As recently reported, Timothy Olyphant (Scream 2, Deadwood) is expected to play Cobb Vanth when The Mandalorian returns, but he’ll supposedly be wearing Boba Fett’s iconic armor while doing so. While many Star Wars fans likely have a good idea of who Ahsoka and Bo-Katan are, the same can’t be said for Cobb Vanth.

Vanth is yet to appear on-screen in the Star Wars franchise, instead featuring in the Aftermath novels by Chuck Wendig. Aftermath has gained wider renown since the release of The Rise of Skywalker, as the story directly sets up Palpatine’s “plan B” and his future resurrection, providing far more information than the movie itself. Cobb Vanth is a human and former slave on the planet Tatooine. Somehow, Vanth was able to escape his life of servitude and later took it upon himself to protect other innocent citizens when the death of Jabba the Hutt opened his planet up to all manner of shady criminals. Vanth patrols a Tatooine settlement called Freetown, fending off scum and villainy, and does so thanks to a set of Mandalorian armor he acquired from an enemy syndicate. This armor is said to have been scavenged by Jawas from the wreck of Jabba’s barge, which is where Boba Fett was last seen being comically knocked into the Sarlacc pit, heavily implying that Vanth is now using Fett’s famous getup to protect, rather than to kill.

Vanth doesn’t walk alone in his quest for freedom and harmony on Tatooine. Not only does he work with the Tusken Raiders, Vanth also takes in a young Hutt and hires one of Jabba’s old employees (Malakili, the topless guy crying over the dead Rancor) as the Huttlet’s mentor. If Vanth is the sheriff of Freetown, then his deputy is Issa-Or, a Twi’lek who might also feature in The Mandalorian season 2. As a vigilante, Cobb Vanth is principled and moral, but isn’t beyond a hefty dose of violence or underhand tactics. This is shown in how he obtains Boba’s armor in the first place, and when he disfigures Lorgan Movellan after already defeating the villain.

Cobb Vanth’s presence in The Mandalorian season 2 would open up some intriguing possibilities for the series. Many assumed the figure seen walking towards Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand in season 1 was Boba Fett, but if Vanth has Fett’s armor, he might’ve been the one rescuing the fallen bounty hunter instead. Helping someone certainly fits more with Vanth’s personality than Boba’s. And what does this mean for Temuera Morrison and the actual Boba Fett? Will the famous disintegration specialist be looking to get his armor back, or is he elsewhere trying to live a quieter life after the fall of the Empire?

Perhaps the most pressing question, however, is how Cobb Vanth fits into the central story of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. It’s possible that Mando could revisit Tatooine in season 2, becoming entangled in the fates of Vanth and Fett. Or maybe the presence of another mysterious do-gooder in Mandalorian armor piques Djarin’s interest, prompting him and Baby Yoda to investigate further. In either case, Cobb Vanth is certainly a fascinating addition to The Mandalorian’s second season, and proves Boba Fett’s story might not be as predictable as first assumed.
