Who Is Electro Jamie Foxxs MCU SpiderMan 3 Villain Explained

In an unprecedented move, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are bringing back Jamie Foxx’s Electro in the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming 3. Last seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, plans for the character were thought to be lost forever when the Andrew Garfield-led series lost its spark, but it has been confirmed that Foxx will be reprising the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, causing fans to speculate on the interconnectivity between the various Spider-Verses and film series.

While neither Marvel nor Sony have officially confirmed the casting, Foxx himself posted news of the character’s return via social media, spiritedly announcing his part in a “Marvel new Spider-Man installment.” Given the character’s history, the announcement that the Academy-Award-winning actor would return to the role came as a surprise — after all, the critically maligned Amazing Spider-Man sequel consisted of an unpopular electric-blue redesign for the iconic villain. Covered by unnecessary CGI that rendered him almost unrecognizable, it has been argued that Foxx’s acting chops were not used to their greatest potential during the film — an opinion not helped by The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s inclusion of the Green Goblin (another comic-derived antagonist) in an already over-crowded script.

Given the MCU’s track record of successfully adapting its source material to create updated and often poignant depictions of Marvel’s beloved super-powered characters, it is certain that something shocking is in store for this iteration of Electro. The questions remain: who is Electro in the comics, and how does his previous onscreen appearance relate to his upcoming arc in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, which is set for release in late 2021?

Electro’s Origins In Marvel Comics

Born Maxwell Dillon, Electro’s origin story from the comics is not dissimilar from how they are portrayed in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Abandoned by his father and raised by an overly protective single mother, Dillon worked as an electrical engineer in Marvel’s main timeline. However, while making repairs, Dillon was accidentally struck by lightning, resulting in a significant mutagenic change which granted him control over electricity. Unable to control his newfound abilities, the struggling Dillon began his villainous career by stealing Stark technology in order to augment his electrokinetic powers. After engaging in a string of unsavory crimes, Dillon — now assuming his “Electro” identity — was misidentified as Spider-Man, further igniting the vitriol hurled at the web-slinger by J. Jonah Jameson and the media.

In a rogues’ gallery already full of some formidable foes, Electro is one of Spider-Man’s most powerful enemies. Although a member of the infamous Sinister Six (an anti-Spider-Man fan club of sorts), Electro has ventured out on his own several times after the group was effectively broken up, hoping to amass additional power. Most notably, the character attempted to take control of New York City’s power plant and energy supply, but was eventually stopped by Spider-Man and convinced to put his life of crime behind him. Ever since, Electro has been in and out of retirement, still managing to cause strife for Peter Parker every now and again.

Electro’s Powers In Marvel Comics

In the comics, Electro is capable of generating enormous amounts of electricity — up to one million volts of it, in theory. With the sparks typically depicted as coming from his fingertips, the shockingly powerful antagonist is able to direct and manipulate the energy with relative ease, enabling his effective and potentially deadly ranged attacks. When his body is charged, he is given additional stamina, endurance, and speed, in some instances shown able to ride lighting and take flight.

In more recent years, Electro has demonstrated the ability to absorb energy from machines and mentally control any electricity-powered device in his vicinity. Furthermore, the character is able to manipulate magnetic fields, an application of his powers that would make the X-Men’s Magneto — The Master of Magnetism — proud. While he was originally vulnerable when around water, Electro’s power is so strong that he is able to vaporize it, lowering the risk of him being electrocuted. Additionally, the villain is able to manipulate electric currents present in the brain — a skill used to great effect against Spider-Man and even Nate Grey, an Omega Level psychic.

Jamie Foxx Plays Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and MCU Spider-Man 3

After the release of the underperforming Amazing Spider-Man 2, it has been long-assumed that the versions of its characters were gone for good, especially when the franchise was rebooted with Tom Holland’s entrance as the radioactive web-head in Captain America: Civil War. Spider-Man’s future within the MCU has been notably tenuous, particularly with last year’s drama surrounding the rumored Marvel/Sony split, an event that would essentially take Holland’s Peter Parker from the larger cinematic universe and continue his story solely under the Sony corporate umbrella. Even as the relationship between the studios appears to have reformed (for a few more films, at least), it was still surprising when THR announced that Foxx would be returning to his former role, especially one that garnered mixed reviews for the successful actor.

But, judging by Foxx’s apparent excitement — expressed in a since-deleted Instagram post — this may be an entirely different version of Maxwell Dillon and his electricity-manipulating alter ego. In the post, Foxx wrote, “…And I won’t be blue in this one!! But a thousand percent badass!!!” alluding to the character’s polarizing azure-tinted makeover for the Amazing Spider-Man series, which strayed far from his comic book appearance. And indeed, this is not the first time a new version of a character from previous Spider-Man entries has been introduced in the MCU while bearing a familiar face. In a moment that inspired cheers from legions of Spidey fans, Spider-Man: Far From Home’s revealed J. Jonah Jameson in its mid-credits scene, played again by J.K. Simmons for the first time in over a decade.

What Foxx’s Electro’s Role Could Be In Spider-Man 3

With the villain’s comic book origins, it is possible that he will be after technology capable of upgrading his powers and, considering Spider-Man’s relationship with Tony Stark, perhaps Peter Parker will be tasked with stopping him from stealing the gadgets his late mentor left behind. However, this plot may be deemed too repetitive, especially as both the Vulture and Mysterio had similar Stark-inspired motivations behind their villainy. It is more likely that writers will draw on the thematic parallels between Peter and Electro, exploring each character’s isolation and loneliness (Spider-Man is presumably on the run and on his own in the wake of Mysterio’s “death,” after all).

As upcoming MCU installments like Disney+’s WandaVision series seem poised to explore concepts surrounding Marvel’s multiverse, creators may be laying groundwork for their own version of the Spider-Verse, explaining why some actors — like Foxx — are present in both series. And then there is the long-awaited and much-discussed Sinister Six film, which, after years of inactivity, has gained new traction. According to Sony executive Amy Pascal in December of 2018, the studio is looking to adapt Drew Goddard’s script to follow a handful of Spidey’s most deadly villains, likely incorporating Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio and Micheal Keaton’s Vulture — and since Electro is certainly a staple in Spider-Man’s story, he would be an unsurprising addition to the super-team. However, since it looks as though Holland only has two films left to work with the MCU (one solo film and one team-up), much remains up in the air as it relates to the series’ eventual development and conclusion. Should Sony and Disney reach a new agreement, Spider-Man’s arc may go uninterrupted, but should Sony strike out on their own, it is possible that many of the character’s MCU-centric developments will be discarded. And it is certain that whatever fate awaits Peter Parker’s onscreen future, the villains who continue to antagonize him will follow suit.

With the success of the Infinity Saga to fuel and embolden their storytelling approach, the MCU continues to push the envelope for what is possible in their continually expanding world. By reusing actors like Foxx to reinvent roles they have played previously, writers and creators seem interested in cherry-picking from the best parts former Marvel film series have to offer, integrating desired elements into their own story — a trend that may well continue with the expansion of the multiverse. So, with Electro’s imminent arrival in Spider-Man Homecoming 3, all bets are off for the villain’s role in the franchise and just how he managed to find himself in the thick of another Spidey-led film.
