Who Is Jo Mullein Far Sectors Comic Character Explained

In a sprawling universe where Green Lanterns are a dime a dozen, Far Sector, by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell follows yet another Earth-based ring-slinger named Sojourner “Jo” Mullein as she’s tasked with solving a murder mystery set at the far edges of known space. But who is Green Lantern Jo Mullein and why was she recruited into the Green Lantern Corp to begin with?

Spinning out of the 2016 launched DC’s Young Animal imprint, Far Sector is a story that takes place billions of light-years away on an alien planet that’s rife with unrest and hidden agendas. Populated by three separate alien species, collectively known as The Trilogy, Jo inserts herself into a cultural and political landscape that she does not fully understand, and to make matters worse, the highly advanced City of Enduring just recently suffered its first murder in 500 years, a brutal inciting incident that spurred Jo’s arrival on the scene in the first place.

Being a relatively new recruit to the Green Lantern cause, Jo isn’t technically part of the GL Corp as we know it. Instead, she’s on a secret mission divorced from the greater Green Lantern story that not only ties into today’s world politics and state of the country with themes running the gambit from the idea of revolution to the right to protest to shady political dealings, to the use of unneeded force in situations that don’t call for it, but also explores what it means to be a person of color in a universe that doesn’t always take too kindly to the shade of one’s skin.

But Lantern Mullein is hardly cut from the same cloth as Green Lantern greats such as Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner or hell, even Guy Gardner. She’s a bit more unsure of herself at first, a bit less confident in her skills as a member of the Corp (she has trouble flying with her ring at times), but is still willing to put her rookie status to the test to make sure she remains a perfectly neutral party on a planet that has forcefully condoned and nearly erased all traces of emotion, a feat that sounds awfully familiar to a handful of blue shorties that preside over the Green Lantern Corp way back on Oa.

And while Jo’s back-story is still one full of mystery and intrigue, tiny hints and scattered flashbacks of what she has gone through to get to this point are littered across the series for fans to piece together and obsess over. Back on Earth, Jo’s path in life took a turn that led her to join the military, then eventually becoming a police officer, immediately solidifying herself as the perfect candidate for solving the alien crime at the heart of her cosmic journey.

Far Sector may only just be hitting its stride as it slowly but surely reveals the reasons for Jo’s recruitment and how the bigger picture of her task in solving the murder ties into it all, but if N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell continue to pump out intriguing issue after intriguing issue, both Hal Jordan and John Stewart may have a run for their money in the greatest Green Lantern department. So if it be in brightest day or blackest night, expect Lantern Mullein to be there in either instance ready to not only put her unique ring to the test, but her skills as a detective and peacekeeper to work.
