Who Is Solomon Grundy Stargirls Undead Villain Explained

On the surface, Solomon Grundy might seem like a bleached holdover from the classic Superfriends cartoon, presented as the Legion of Doom’s muscle. However, beneath the lumbering giant’s grizzled interior lies an extremely multifaceted character. In many ways, Solomon Grundy is DC’s villainous answer to the Hulk – and every bit as complex.

Solomon Grundy is best known by his eponymous appearance in the nursery rhyme – “Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday, christened on Tuesday, married on Wednesday, took ill on Thursday, grew worse on Friday, died on Saturday, buried on Sunday, that was the end, of Solomon Grundy.” The character made his first appearance in All-American Comics #61 in 1944. Solomon is the lumbering, reanimated corpse of Cyrus Gold, a murdered merchant. Resurrected with brute strength, near-invulnerability, and murderous instincts, Grundy battles Green Lantern Alan Scott in his first appearance. For the next seventy-six years, Grundy would bedevil both the Justice Society of Ameria and their Silver Age successors, the Justice League.

Much like the nursery rhyme, however, Solomon Grundy exists in several different stages. As with Doctor Who’s eponymous character, Solomon Grundy returns to life in different iterations – with some more intelligent than others. In the 1990’s Starman series, the hero Jack Knight befriends a gentle and innocent version of Solomon Grundy. This is particularly challenging for Jack’s father Ted, the Golden Age Starman, who witnessed a previous version of Grundy cause the death of the Star-Spangled Kid. However, this Grundy ultimately gives his life to save Jack. Starman eventually learns that the Parliament of Trees, a group of plant elementals, tried to make Cyrus Gold one of their own after his death, but failed, resulting in the constantly-regenerating Solomon Grundy.

The character has also had a storied list of appearances outside of comics. He’s appeared in everything from The Legend of Superheroes variety show (the less said about this the better) to recent entries such as Gotham and Arrow. He’s probably most famous for his aforementioned appearance in the classic Superfriend cartoons, though the character has also appeared in later animated series such as Justice League and The Batman. Currently, Solomon Grundy is slated to appear in the upcoming Stargirl series.

Hopefully, the new Stargirl series will take advantage of Grundy’s long and twisted history. The show could also build upon Solomon Grundy’s role as the murderer of the previous Star-Spangled Kid, but with other villains like Tigress and Sportsmaster also appearing, the show already has enough villain to work with. Still, Solomon Grundy’s multi-faceted regeneration has never fully been explored outside of comics. Perhaps Stargirl will finally give Solomon Grundy his due.
