Who Is Sylvie Lady Loki Or Enchantress Identity Explained

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Loki episode 3, “Lamentis”.

Loki episode 3 confirmed its Loki variant isn’t exactly the “Lady Loki” of the comics – rather, that idea has been combined with another character, Sylvie Lushton, the second Enchantress. In the comics, the character of Lady Loki was created as part of J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel’s seminal Thor run, which kicked off in 2007.

There, Thor restored the Asgardians after the final Ragnarok, discovering the gods could not truly die so long as they lived on in the hearts and minds and souls of mortals. Unfortunately for the God of Thunder, Loki’s spirit was able to engineer twisted circumstances where it possessed the body of Thor’s lover, Sif. This new incarnation of Loki claimed to have put her malicious ways behind her, and became known as Lady Loki. Crucially, Lady Loki was essentially the same soul possessing a new form, as proven when she began undermining Thor’s rule of the restored Asgard and even forged a sinister alliance with Doctor Doom. Though Lady Loki didn’t last, and Sif was restored to her own body, the character has since returned in stories that confirm the Marvel Comics version of Loki is gender-fluid.

When Sophia Di Martino made her debut in Loki episode 2, it was immediately clear Marvel was taking a very different approach. Rather than the same old Loki, she’s a variant from another timeline, one who even appeared to possess a different powerset to the traditional villain. What’s more, visually she looked nothing like the Lady Loki of the comics, with Di Martino even dying her naturally dark hair blonde for the part. Loki episode 3 confirmed what many suspected, that she is in fact playing a mash-up of Lady Loki and another character, Sylvie Lushton, the second Enchantress.

Sylvie Lushton: Marvel’s Second Enchantress’ Origin & Powers Explained

Who Is Sylvie Lady Loki Or Enchantress Identity Explained

In the comics, Sylvie Lushton’s origin remained something of a mystery for quite some time. She herself believed she was simply an ordinary human girl who had woken up one day with magical powers, and decided to use them to become a superhero – calling herself the second Enchantress. In reality, though, she was a magical being who had been created by Loki as part of his plans to lay traps for any teams who called themselves “Avengers.” His plan for Sylvie was that she would join any Young Avengers team, effectively becoming his mole within them, with the trickster god watching the world through her eyes; meanwhile, her personality was designed to cause the maximum amount of conflict within the group. Enchantress came close to joining the Young Avengers, but they learned her origins, and refused to let her remain in their base because she posed a significant security risk. This rejection deeply wounded Sylvie, but she remains of a heroic inclination, although easily tempted towards the darkness. She’s currently missing, having been cast to another of the Ten Realms by the original Enchantress in order to be given an opportunity to prove herself worthy of her name.

Enchantress is a remarkably powerful sorceress, possibly rivaling any from Asgard, and she was originally conceived as a match for the Young Avengers’ Wiccan. Her abilities seem to have increased as she’s practiced her magic, though, and in Fearless Defenders #9 she actually went head-to-head with both Doctor Strange’s best student Clea, although she was unable to handle both Clea and Strange at once. Sylvie possesses all the traditional comic book sorcery powers – enchantments, teleportation, transmutation, summoning spells, deflection of other magical attacks, and telekinesis.

How Loki Is Changing Sylvie From The Comics

This Sylvie appears to be very different to the comic book version, though; rather than a creation of Loki, she is in fact a variant of the God of Mischief from a branched timeline. She was adopted, just like the traditional Loki, although she’s yet to say who by; apparently her mother died when she was young, and where the prime timeline’s Loki was taught magic by his mother Frigga, she was self-taught. There are enough gaps and mysteries in her tale to raise the possibility that, just as in the comics, Sylvie is not what she seems to be; the self-taught nature of her powers sounds suspiciously like the comic book Enchantress, suggesting she could actually be a pawn.

Sylvie’s magic seems to be different to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki’s, in that she has focused on enchantments of the mind. She can possess the bodies of others, and use her magics to probe the minds of others and persuade them to tell her what she wants to know. This latter technique requires direct physical contact, and stronger minds can resist it, necessitating the creation of artificial scenarios in their minds in order to put them at ease. In addition, this version of Sylvie is also a phenomenal hand-to-hand combatant, effortlessly defeating a number of Time Variance Authority agents in her raid on their facility; her prowess in combat far outstrips that of the prime timeline’s Loki.

Sylvie has apparently dedicated herself to overthrowing both the Time-Keepers and the TVA. Loki episode 2 featured a blink-and-you’ll-miss it nod to Sylvie confirming the TVA has encountered her before in the field, perhaps explaining how she became aware of their existence and figured out how to jump through the timeline. She’s spent years putting together a sophisticated plan to take down the TVA, only for her plot to fail due to the intervention of Loki.

Why Loki Has Combined Lady Loki & Enchantress For Sylvie

All this naturally raises a curious question; why has Marvel Studios decided to combine Lady Loki and the second Enchantress, Sylvie Lushton, in order to create this character? The decision is all the more striking because Marvel typically like to use a mirror-image villain, and Sylvie’s powerset and background are different enough to the prime Loki’s to feel as though she doesn’t fit. But, of course, Sylvie doesn’t seem to be the real villain of Loki; she’s more of a secondary character, an antagonistic ally, with the TVA and their mysterious Time-Keepers serving as the real foes. You don’t want two of your leads, who are working side-by-side with one another, to be too similar – that makes for a pretty poor dynamic.

Meanwhile, it’s still possible Marvel intend to throw in a twist, revealing Sylvie is actually a pawn created by another Loki. Other variants of Loki are known to appear in the show as well, and there are enough apparent gaps in her story to suggest she may well have been fashioned as a tool. If that turns out to be the case, then Marvel’s decision to use Sylvie in this role will prove to be even smarter. Hopefully more will be revealed in Loki episode 4, as the two trickster gods contemplate how to get off Lamentis.
