Who Is The Friend Of Monica’s Mother Nick Fury & Real SWORD Explained

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the WandaVision finale.

The first of WandaVision episode 9’s post-credit scenes tease a familiar friend of Maria Rambeau’s – Nick Fury. After eight weeks and nine wild episodes, WandaVision has officially come to an end. However, while this chapter of the MCU is over, the series finale offered plenty of teases for what’s on the way. From Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to the continued existence of White Vision (Paul Bettany), it’s certain the MCU will be dealing with the fallout from WandaVision for a while.

This is perhaps especially true for Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who underwent quite the journey throughout WandaVision’s run. Episode 9, appropriately titled “The Series Finale”, only hinted at the powers she’s developed through her travels in and out of the Hex, and it’s already confirmed she’ll appear in 2022’s Captain Marvel 2. However, the WandaVision post-credit scene hints at another place she’ll emerge. As the FBI takes control of the Westview cleanup, Monica is pulled aside by an unnamed agent (Lori Livingston). That agent soon reveals herself to be a Skrull and tells Monica she was sent by “an old friend of your mother’s.”

The Skrull never says who this friend is, but it’s clear – Monica is going to meet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Fury and Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) worked together in Captain Marvel, as they teamed up with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) to protect the Skrulls from the Kree. That connection alone explains the “old friend” comment, but the presence of the Skrull agent further cements Fury’s identity. The end-credits scene from Spider-Man: Far From Home revealed Fury has jetted off into space and is now working with the Skrulls he met in Captain Marvel. His initial plans with them weren’t clear at the time, but it sounds like they’ll be revealed soon.

On WandaVision, the Skrull agent explains this old friend wants to meet with Monica. When the budding superhero asks where, the Skrull merely points upward. This means Monica will be joining Fury up in space and will perhaps be brought into the MCU’s real SWORD. WandaVision featured SWORD in a major capacity, but Acting Director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg) corrupted it with his fixation on weapons. It seems more likely that whatever Fury is working on in space is closer to the proper SWORD, which was created to protect the earth against extraterrestrial threats. Spider-Man: Far From Home didn’t outright call it SWORD, but it so far seems to be closer in line with the organization from the comics.

WandaVision’s end-credits scene thus sets the stage for Monica to have some kind of role in Secret Invasion, the upcoming Disney+ series starring Fury and Captain Marvel’s villain-turned-ally Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). It’s hard to say exactly in what capacity Monica could appear in Secret Invasion, which might also depend on the events of Captain Marvel 2. However, it stands to reason Monica will begin working with Fury in the future, allowing her to continue her mother’s legacy by joining a more positive version of SWORD.
