Who Is Ziwe Succession Talk Show Host & RealLife Comparison Explained

In Succession season 3, episode 3, Ziwe made her hilarious debut as Sophie Iwobi, the host of the in-universe talk show The Disruption – here’s some background on Ziwe and how her role in the show is quite similar to that of one the actress hosts on Showtime. The HBO drama continued its season 3 hot streak with another fast-paced episode last night as Logan and Kendall Roy continue to duke it out over control of WayStar RoyCo. This round, though, came with a few distractions. While the rogue Roy seemingly started off the season strong, Kendall has slowly erred toward tragedy this season and episode 3, titled “The Disruption,” only furthers this.

More obsessed with his image than ever, instead of planning his next move, Kendall begins the episode being profiled by a journalist in a moment that puts his narcissism fully on display. This narcissism culminates in a particularly embarrassing moment for Kendall – Ziwe’s Sophie Iwobi absolutely rips Kendall apart on her talk show The Disruption, but the Roy sibling seems to endorse the “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” philosophy when he has his partygoers watch the segment in a cringe-inducing moment. Eventually, Kendall even volunteers to go on Sophie’s show, but he bails at the last minute after Shiv releases a scathing open letter about his struggles with addiction.

Sophie rips Kendall and his plan apart nonetheless and it’s not exactly far from what Ziwe does in real life. The actress and talk show host has been a force in the comedy scene for the last few years, writing for the Showtime series Desus & Mero and even hosting her own hilarious Instagram live series Baited With Ziwe. In Baited, Ziwe brings on controversial guests (not unlike Kendall Roy) and asks them questions in an attempt to get them to say something absolutely embarrassing. It seems Sophie Iwobi’s own goals weren’t far off from Ziwe’s hilariously incisive Instagram interviews.

Baited With Ziwe led the comedian and actress to get her own talk show on Showtime. The eponymously titled series aired for six episodes earlier this year and featured a wide range of guests including politicians like Stacey Abrams and Julian Castro and pop culture icons like Fran Lebowitz, Law & Order’s Christopher Meloni, who plays Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), and writer Jeremy O. Harris. Ziwe was renewed for a second season earlier this year, but there’s no word on when it will premiere. In a genius bit of brand synergy, Nicholas Brittell, composer of Succession’s iconic theme song, also composed the theme music for Ziwe’s series.

While The Disruption With Sophie Iwobi is eerily similar to Ziwe’s own show, there’s another series out there that it also seems to take inspiration from. Full Frontal With Samantha Bee is another late night talk show that skewers both politics and pop culture and The Disruption seems to take a page out of that book, blending Ziwe’s own irreverent personality with a more straitlaced talk show à la Full Frontal. Still, no one is doing it like Ziwe and the actress and comedian proved that on Succession season 3 episode 3. Here’s hoping it won’t be the last we’ve seen of Sophie Iwobi.
