WARNING: There are SPOILERS ahead for The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 3, “Chapter 11: The Heiress.”
The Mandalorian season 2, episode 3, “The Heiress” introduced audiences to the live-action version of Bo-Katan, played by Katee Sackhoff. Fans of the franchise have been looking forward to seeing how The Mandalorian would treat the character since May, when reports announced that Sackhoff would reprise her role as Bo-Katan in season 2 — unlike other characters from the animated Star Wars world, who were recast for live action (most notably, Rosario Dawson being cast to take over as Ahsoka Tano).
Sackhoff has voiced the character Bo-Katan Kryze since she was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, season 4. The character appeared in several more episodes throughout the show’s run, and also appeared in the follow-up series Star Wars Rebels (produced after Disney canceled Clone Wars in 2013, but before the final season was aired on Disney+).
While Sackhoff does bare a striking resemblance to her animated counterpart, the actress likely looks familiar to most because of her extensive filmography. Sackhoff has played a number of femme fatale characters in various sci-fi and superhero properties — although most would recognize her as being Starbuck, a lead from the much-loved Sci-Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica.
Kara Thrace, or “Starbuck,” was a one of the main characters on Battlestar Galactica, a reboot of a 1970s TV series. Sackhoff payed a gender-swapped version of a character from the original; like the 1987 Starbuck, Sackhoff’s version was a tough, hot-headed pilot with a penchant for gambling and drinking. Although the actress was in her early 20s at the time, her acting prowess impressed producers like Ronald D. Moore enough to win them over — despite the original plan being to cast someone much older [via LA Times]. Starbuck is remembered as one of the most interesting and complex characters on television: she’s tough and effective, but underneath the veneer of bravado is a broken soldier looking for a cause.
Since that career-defining role, Sackhoff has gone on to play various strong female characters — like her turn in the season 2 episode of The Mandalorian. Sackhoff has been working steadily since Battlestar Galactica ended in 2009: Sackhoff took a recurring antagonist role on 24, playing Dana Walsh, an analyst with a secret past. She landed a main part in the drama series Longmire, playing Victoria ‘Vic’ Moretti, a recently-transferred detective with skeletons in her closet. She has a recurring role in The Flash as Amunet, a fan-favorite villain who runs a crime family in Central City. Currently, Sackhoff stars in the Netflix sci-fi series Another Life. In between these live-action roles, Sackhoff has also worked as a voice actor, lending her acting talents to not just Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, but also Robot Chicken and the video game series Call of Duty.
