Who Plays Sharkboy In We Can Be Heroes (Not Taylor Lautner)

We Can Be Heroes, the loose follow-up to Robert Rodriguez’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, is finally streaming on Netflix, and it features a new actor replacing Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy. The film mostly centers on a group of new child superheroes, including the daughter of the original film’s protagonists. Taylor Dooley, the actress who originally played Lavagirl, returned to reprise her role, but Lautner did not.

Despite a goofy storyline and some absurd special effects, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl became something of a cult hit. It built off the CGI-heavy, child-oriented structure of Rodriguez’s popular Spy Kids trilogy in some fun ways, while also serving as a launching platform for Lautner’s career. Now that many of the kids who watched the first movie on its release have grown up, We Can Be Heroes has garnered interest from old fans as well as a new generation of young viewers.

Unfortunately for those coming to the new movie hoping for a cast reunion, Taylor Lautner doesn’t make an appearance. Lavagirl has a slightly larger part in the movie, which justified bringing Dooley back to reprise the role, but Sharkboy is barely seen and has no lines, so a return from Lautner didn’t make a lot of sense. Instead, the grown-up Sharkboy is played by J.J. Dashnaw, a stuntman and stunt coordinator who’s worked with Rodriguez many times before. Dashnaw’s past work includes the original Sharkboy and Lavagirl, the Spy Kids trilogy, Sin City, Planet Terror, and a long list of non-Rodriguez films like Predators and Django Unchained.

Given that Sharkboy doesn’t have any lines or a major role in the new film, Lautner returning wouldn’t really have been worth it. In his absence, Dashnaw is a great pick for the character’s cameo appearance, as he was still involved in the original movies and is a close colleague of Rodriguez. Given that Sharkboy’s face is covered, and that Dashnaw’s career is as a stunt coordinator and not an actor, there’s still potential for Lautner to return to the role in the future. Rodriguez has suggested as much himself, though a future reprisal would require We Can Be Heroes to do well enough for a sequel to be ordered.

If the new movie takes off though, and Netflix orders more superhero content from its zany super-powered world, a Lautner return seems very possible. For fans of the original, it would be a great touch to see him and Dooley interacting as their iconic characters once again. In the meantime though, J.J. Dashnaw is a great fill-in for Sharkboy in We Can Be Heroes.
