Why A Hawkeye TV Show Is Better Than A Movie According to Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner explains why a Hawkeye TV show is preferable to a movie. The launch of Disney+ in 2019 has allowed the Marvel Cinematic Universe to expand beyond the big screen with multiple series devoted to supporting characters in the MCU such as Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), Vision (Paul Bettany), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston). After a foray into animation with What If…?, Marvel will return to live-action with Hawkeye debuting on November 24.

Heavily inspired by the Hawkeye comics written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by David Aja, the Disney+ series picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Clint Barton (Renner) go down a dark path as Ronin after his entire family was dusted by Thanos’ snap. Now that the Blip has brought them back, all Clint wants to do is spend the holidays in New York City with his wife (Linda Cardellini) and kids, though he becomes sidetracked when confronted by enemies from this past and teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to take them down.

Appearing on Vanity Fair’s video series in which actors break down their careers, Jeremy Renner recapped everything from his Oscar-nominated performances in The Hurt Locker and The Town to his popular role as Clint Barton in The Avengers and his upcoming solo series Hawkeye. While many wanted to see his character return for a solo movie like his MCU counterpart, Black Widow, Renner explains why a television series is preferable:

I was really excited about the idea of, on Disney Plus, doing like a long-form storytelling version of it. I think it’s a more accessible way to learn about a character, even for myself, because he was part of a giant universe. How do you get into the real backstory and the understanding the character a bit more? Long-form of storytelling in a series is a better accessible way, I think. It’s great so we could do a six-hour movie instead of like a two-hour movie.

Though Renner has been portraying the MCU’s master marksman since a cameo appearance in 2011’s Thor, followed by prominent roles in team-up movies like The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War, the character has never truly been the focus of any of these storylines. That is set to change with his solo series on Disney+, which will also introduce Hawkeye’s young super-fan and eventual successor, Kate Bishop, and another hero in Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) who will be getting her own solo series titled Echo.

Hawkeye will also continue Yelena Belova’s (Florence Pugh) storyline from Black Widow after a post-credits scene put her on a collision course with Barton for his supposed role in Natasha Romanoff’s death. Case in point, the series will be doing some heavy-lifting in the MCU with its various storylines, so Hawkeye will definitely benefit from the 5-6 hours of runtime it will have as a miniseries on Disney+ as compared to a feature film’s 2 hours.
