Why Among Us 2021 Roadmap Hasnt Released Yet

In a January blog post, Among Us creators InnerSloth promised a content roadmap for 2021. The idea was to “be more transparent” about what features were launching for the social deduction game, and in which order. As of mid-May, however, that roadmap for Among Us still doesn’t exist, and given both the time of year and the likely explanation, it may not arrive at all.

Among Us first launched in June 2018 as a mobile-only title for iOS and Android, only reaching PCs in November that year. It was largely sidelined until early 2020, when Twitch and YouTube streamers helped shoot it to massive popularity. This resulted in a Nintendo Switch port in December, and plans for both Xbox and PlayStation versions by the end of 2021. In terms of original content, the biggest release so far has been March’s Among Us Airship update, which introduced the biggest map the game had sported so far.

In the January blog, InnerSloth states upfront that it “won’t have dates [on the roadmap] until we know we can hit them.” That’s probably the key to the question – the company’s core team consists of just five people, which is just a fraction the size of studios working on games like Fortnite or Minecraft. Even if InnerSloth is working as hard as it can, it was caught off guard by Among Us’ success and is still struggling to catch up. Efforts have been underway to hire more people – but the company is prioritizing quality over speed, since the latter could actually backfire if someone doesn’t pan out.

There’s A Lot Coming Up For Among Us

For such a small team, the company has set some relatively high ambitions for Among Us. While the Xbox and PlayStation ports are being built with outside help, InnerSloth is still planning a revamped art style, 15-player lobbies, new character colors, and a new meeting screen. It just recently finished new Twitch and Discord integrations, and all the while has been tackling fixing Among Us’ bugs as they pop up. That would be plenty of work for any small or even mid-sized game developer.

InnerSloth is due to announce more Among Us update news later in May. That’s assuming, of course, that plans are still reasonably on track. It could be that there’s just too much on InnerSloth’s plate for Among Us to lock down a definite time frame, in which case that news will probably be pushed to June. Either way, it may not make much sense to talk about an Among Us roadmap – the year is nearly half over, and it would be safer to be vague than create unrealistic expectations about what new Among Us content can be delivered and when.
