After starring in the first three Terminator films, action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger sat out 2009’s Terminator Salvation, and here’s why. Schwarzenegger has starred in many great films, but the first two Terminator movies are arguably the Austrian Oak at his peak. The former bodybuilder tends to get a lot of flack for his perceived lack of acting ability, but there are multiple roles that run directly counter to that claim, his work as the T-800 standing tall among them.
In The Terminator, Schwarzenegger’s villainous T-800 is the perfect portrayal of a cold, emotionless machine willing to do anything to accomplish its mission. Sure, detractors will joke that Schwarzenegger only has the range to play such a role, but in reality, it takes a lot of effort to be so machine-like. Schwarzenegger may not be Daniel Day Lewis, but he has tons of charisma onscreen in most movies, and it definitely took focus and drive to dial all that down to play a remorseless killer. Terminator 2’s reprogrammed T-800 required an even more complex task, playing a machine slowly learning to express human-like emotions.
Schwarzenegger again returned to play another different T-800 variation in Terminator 3, but unfortunately, didn’t participate in Terminator Salvation. To date, it’s the only Terminator movie without his direct involvement.
Why Arnold Schwarzenegger Didn’t Return for Terminator Salvation
The reason behind Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lack of involvement with Terminator Salvation is actually pretty simple. Schwarzenegger was elected to be the governor of California in 2003, not long after Terminator 3 hit theaters. He wouldn’t leave office until 2011, following the completion of his second term. That means he was right in the thick of things when Terminator Salvation was being made. Schwarzenegger was indeed contacted about a role in the film, but replied that there was no way his schedule would allow it. Then, producers asked him to make a cameo as a T-800 late in the movie, but he still didn’t have the time available.
Finally, Terminator Salvation’s makers and Schwarzenegger reached a compromise. The T-800 would be physically played by a body double for Schwarzenegger, and then the actor would have his face superimposed on top of the double via CGI effects. As seen above, the final effect in the finished film isn’t exactly the greatest looking. Funnily enough, years later when set to return for Terminator Genisys, Schwarzenegger would publicly bash Terminator Salvation, and express his thankfulness that he didn’t end up being more fully involved with such a flop. Then again, Genisys flopped too, so maybe he now wishes he’d missed out on that one as well.
