Why Atlanta Season 3 Took So Long To Make

Season 3 of Atlanta was ordered in June of 2018, but thanks to production delays, it is still months away from premiering; here’s why it took so long to make. The second season of Atlanta came out over three years ago, and audiences have been patiently waiting to watch the next entry of the award-winning show ever since. Several delays have pushed back the release date of the European-set season 3, but the newly released trailer could mean the wait is almost over. Atlanta explores themes of race, family, relationships, education, careers, and one’s past. In the season 2 finale, Earnie (Donald Glover) and Al (Brian Tyree Henry) were boarding a flight to Europe for a music tour featuring Al and his fellow rapper Clark County (RJ Walker). The third season will pick up right where the characters left off.

Written by brothers Donald and Stephen Glover, Atlanta has garnered critical acclaim and consistent success since its release in 2016. Donald Glover is not only a writer on the show. He is also the creator, one of the executive producers, and the lead actor. The first season even won Glover a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Glover portrays Earn, a college dropout who works as a music manager for his cousin Al (the rapper Paper Boi). The show also features LaKeith Stanfield and Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz.

Atlanta season 3 was initially set to release in 2019 but was delayed due to the actors’ conflicting schedules, including Beetz’s role in Joker and Henry’s in Godzilla vs. Kong. Donald Glover was also busy releasing his second album, writing and producing the musical film Guava Island, and voicing Simba in The Lion King remake. Glover’s complicated schedule and other priorities in his personal life, including injuries he was dealing with, further contributed to the Atlanta production delay. After the initial delays, season 4 was set to film directly following season 3 in the spring of 2020. FX CEO John Landgraf stated that the show would return for a planned premiere date in January of 2021.

In the spring of 2020 however, the show was delayed once again. The coronavirus pandemic forced production to shut down for the entirety of 2020, making the January 2021 release date impossible. The pandemic gave creator Donald Glover the chance to write both the third and fourth seasons of the show, but it also meant that production would be delayed for another year. In April of 2021, Glover revealed that production had finally started on Atlanta season 3 in Europe, with the season consisting of 10 episodes, followed by season 4, which will return to Atlanta for eight more episodes.

Atlanta season 3 will begin exactly where season 2 ended without placing any time between the two. In 2018’s season 2 finale, Earn finally earned Al’s respect after spending the entire season drifting closer and closer to being fired. While in line to go through airport security for their European music tour, Earn realized that he forgot about the gun inside his carry-on. He managed to sneak the gun into Clark’s luggage in an attempt to double-cross him. Clark’s manager (Matthew Barnes) took the fall for the weapon instead, and Clark boarded the plane, leaving Earn as the sole manager instead of leaving Paper Boi as the sole performer on the tour. After nearly four years of waiting on Donald Glover’s busy schedule and Atlanta’s production delay, Atlanta will finally return in the first half of 2022, and audiences can sigh a breath of relief because season 4 is set to premiere within just one year of season 3.
