Why Baldurs Gate 3 Could Contain a Famous Critical Role Character

When Baldur’s Gate 3 enters early access in September 2020, players will be able to interact with nearly 600 characters. But hiding among the many, many NPCs of Avernus and Faerûn might be a character familiar to fans of the popular web series, Critical Role.

Critical Role is a weekly web series featuring a group of voice actors playing through Dungeons & Dragons campaigns created by Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer. The first campaign focused on the adventures of a group known as Vox Machina; the second (currently on-going) campaign is set in the same world but years later, and follows The Mighty Nein. Over the years, Critical Role has had a number of guest players, one of whom was actor Joe Manganiello playing a character named Arkhan the Cruel.

In an interview with Inverse, Manganiello explains that Arkhan was originally created for a private campaign, but Manganiello decided to use him on Critical Role when he was invited to guest star. It was a pivotal role on the show, as Arkhan fought alongside Vox Machina in their final battle against end-of-campaign-villain, Vecna the Ascended. The character of Arkhan has appeared in various iterations over the years, including in a Wizards of the Coast-sponsored web series, Force Grey. But the Critical Role version of Arkhan became part of official Dungeons & Dragons canon in the recent campaign, Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. In that campaign, Arkhan is a major NPC players can interact with, and among the items he wields is the Hand of Vecna, which he stole at the end of his time on Critical Role.

Where Players Might Find Arkhan in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus is a standalone tabletop prequel campaign to the upcoming video game Baldur’s Gate 3. Developers confirmed in a recent stream that events from Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus will be directly reflected in the world of Baldur’s Gate 3. Players will begin their story in Baldur’s Gate 3 in Avernus, the first plane of Hell — and also the place where Arkhan currently resides. But, even more tantalizingly, in an Instagram post promoting the release of Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, Manganiello said, “I have a funny feeling this is only the beginning of the story…”

Given Manganiello’s long history of working with Wizards of the Coast, it’s not a stretch at all to guess that Arkhan the Cruel might appear in Baldur’s Gate 3. Arkhan is in an on-going mission to free the goddess Tiamat, who is currently trapped in Avernus, offering plenty of ways players could pursue side-quests offered by Arkhan. And it’s possible that other Critical Role characters could appear as well. The show has had a healthy relationship with the official Dungeons & Dragons team, from the sponsorship of campaign two by D&D Beyond, to the creation of an official Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (the setting for campaign two). There’s every chance players could stumble across a cameo from the Mighty Nein as they stumble around the continent of Faerûn.
