Why Batwoman Recasting Kate Kane Is A Good Decision

The Arrowverse has officially recast Batwoman’s former heroine Kate Kane and not only is Wallis Day perfect for the role, but it’s the right move after Ruby Rose’s departure. Batwoman season 2 came with a game-changer for The CW’s DC TV franchise after Rose decided to step down from the role of the DC character. Initially, many believed that Kate would be recast, but instead, the creators invented a new Batwoman in Ryan Wilder, played by Javicia Leslie, to pick up the mantle from Kate after she went missing in the season premiere. While Ryan has become her own Batwoman and refreshed the series from a new perspective, Kate’s disappearance wouldn’t be forever.

Even Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries had made it clear that at some point, the mystery of Kate would get resolved. While some thought it wouldn’t be until a lot later in the season or even until Batwoman season 3, Kate’s absence has been addressed. Despite the characters now officially believing that she is actually dead, Batwoman season 2, episode 8, “Survived Much Worse” revealed Kate’s actual fate. Somewhere in Gotham City, down a sewer, lied an unconscious Kate with bandages all over her face while spotlighting her necklace around her neck to indicate to viewers that the original Batwoman is very much alive.

Everything that’s known so far, based on what Julia Pennyworth revealed, is that they had found body parts by the coast of Bludhaven. Even though she never specifies what parts they had found exactly, Julia had been informed that the DNA that was ran was in fact Kate’s, thus confirming to Luke Fox and Mary Hamilton that Gotham City’s first Batwoman had passed away. The body parts they had discovered are obviously why Kate’s face was wrapped up in bandages, thus paving the way for Day to become Arrowverse’s new Kate Kane.

Even though Batwoman is and will always now continue to be followed through the perspective of Ryan Wilder, the recast is a strong move for the Arrowverse. For starters, Day is no stranger to the DC TV world as she portrayed the formidable Nyssa-Vex on Krypton where she also became Jor-El’s mother and, technically, the future grandmother of Superman and Supergirl. Seeing Day back in DC TV is incredible due to the fact that Krypton came to an end way too soon after only two seasons on SYFY. But for the plot itself, it’s the right thing for Batwoman to not only make it clear as day that Kate’s arc will get a conclusion, but that they’re going to get to bottom of it.

At some point, Batwoman season 2 or beyond would have needed to wrap that storyline up and there’s never a version of this where Rose would come back. Whatever way they would re-introduce Kate down the line, it was always going to have to be a recast anyway, no matter what. Even if Day’s Kate isn’t a big presence in the coming seasons, at least now the Arrowverse has a new iteration of the character that can come back easier as opposed to the previous actress. The show is still about Ryan, as it should be, but it’s only right that Batwoman is getting ready to get to the next stage in Kate’s big mysterious storyline that will now have Wallis Day playing the Arrowverse’s new incarnation of her.
