Why Bruce Willis Disliked Die Hard 2

Here’s why Bruce Willis likes Die Hard 2: Die Harder the least out of the entire series. 1980s action cinema was largely dominated by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, who with their muscular physiques and gigantic machine guns rarely seemed to be in any real danger or mortal peril. Die Hard from 1988 took the opposite approach, with Bruce Willis’ cop John McClane finding himself outnumbered and outgunned during a terrorist siege. McClane was a very relatable hero, whose marriage was on the rocks, who bled (a lot) when cut and he even cries during his lowest ebb.

Die Hard is now a classic action movie and spawned many imitators. Needless to say, it also spawned a franchise, with Die Hard 2 and 3 – released in 1990 and 1995 respectively – being well-regarded in their own right. Live Free Or Die Hard saw Willis return to the role after twelve years, but its PG-13 rating, more outlandish action and McClane’s increasing invulnerability led to mixed reviews.

The most recent installment was 2013’s A Good Day To Die Hard, which sent McClane to Russia for an adventure with his son. While the sequel was a hit it received largely negative reviews, with Willis himself also giving a fairly disengaged performance. When Die Hard 2 was released back in 1990, reviews criticized the way it essentially photocopied the formula of the original while adding louder setpieces. Still, the sequel is fondly regarded among followers of the series, but while chatting with AICN (via Rotten Tomatoes) in 2007, Willis has this to say about the movie:

“The second was my least favorite and the least fun. Far to [sic] self-referentially precious, the story was all over the place, and suffered from severe un-claustrophobic-ness.”

Willis isn’t necessarily wrong with his critiques, as Die Hard 2 lacks the same claustrophobic tension of the original due to its airport setting, while it does feature lots of cute callbacks to the original. The sequel famously tried to make light of its similarities to the original by having McClane blurt out “How can the same s*** happen to the same guy twice?”, a line that is now considered cringy due to its on the nose nature. That said, the sequel is much better than Willis gives it credit.

It seems part of the actor’s unhappiness with Die Hard 2 – aside from the aforementioned screenplay issues – is that director Renny Harlin saw the movie much differently than his star. Harlin revealed years later that, given the movie’s story involving terrorism, Willis felt McClane should be much more serious and rarely make jokes. Willis reluctantly agreed to shoot “funny” takes of certain scenes to give Harlin options in the editing room, but the director ended up using the bulk of them in the final movie. In the same AICN chat, Willis felt Live Free Or Die Hard – which he was promoting at the time – was the best sequel, and comparable in quality to the original.
