Call of Duty: Warzone players aren’t thrilled that after a hyped-up nuclear explosion event, their big new map is the same one with ’80s flare.

The drop of a brand new map in a battle royale game is supposed to be an event. These are massive online games that players engage with for hours at a time, but their locale selection is pretty limited. There are plenty of locations to explore on just one huge arena, but a second, third, or even fourth staging ground could refresh a stale experience. This is why so many Call of Duty: Warzone players felt frustrated after the recent drop of the ’80s refresh of the Verdansk map. Rather than a whole new area, the developers chose to refresh one of the existing maps, creating a slightly re-themed (but mostly identical) experience.
Warzone players have been exploring Verdansk since the game came out in 2019 as part of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare package. It is Activision’s second stab at a Call of Duty take on the popular shooter genre after Blackout in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and it’s been a big hit. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, Warzone became its own free-to-play entity and linked up with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War when that launched in late 2020. Following a hyped event that nuked the original Warzone map, the 1980s overlay for Verdansk emerged to align Warzone with the same era setting of Black Ops Cold War. However, many players feel like it doesn’t change enough from the previous incarnation.
Upon the launch of the newly christened Verdansk ’84, players took to social media to state that they felt misled by the whole Warzone event. The nuclear explosion that took out the old map was hyped up as game-changing, and similar events in games like Fortnite have created entirely new areas for players to explore. In Warzone, it seems that there are mostly cosmetic differences between the two versions of Verdansk, meaning that the gameplay won’t change too much from what it was before the nuke.
Why Call Of Duty’s New Warzone Map Is Disappointing
When compared to changes in other popular battle royale titles, the complaints against Warzone make sense. Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment just added a new 3v3 game mode to Apex Legends, expanding the game beyond the standard battle royale gameplay for the first time. The developers of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds have kept adding maps over the course of its life, and players now have ten different options they could jump in on. All this is in addition to Fortnite, which is a game that gets new content at such a pace that other developers might have a hard time keeping up with its variety.
With all that in mind, it’s understandable how those who’ve dedicated themselves to Call of Duty: Warzone might find the Verdansk ’84 update disappointing. Activision is a huge company on the same scale as the people behind Apex Legends and Fortnite, but Warzone is just not getting the same number of huge updates as those games. This need for constant change is a peculiar quirk of the battle royale genre, and it’s one that Warzone needs to work on.
