Why Canada Will Likely Free Serena Joy Rather Than Send Her To Gilead

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale ends with catharsis and uncertainty, but here’s why Canada is likely to free Serena Joy instead of sending her back to Gilead. Though the episode begins with June facing the strong possibility that the Waterfords will never properly answer for their crimes, it ends with her character finally flipping the tables of the trio’s past dynamic completely around. Fred (Joseph Fiennes) is brutally killed by June and other ex-Handmaids in No Man’s Land, and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) receives his finger and wedding ring in the mail as dark, taunting symbols.

Though murder, despite how satisfying it is within the context of a plot, is never a good thing, there’s something undeniably karmic about the toxic couple’s dream life being snatched out of their reach. Both Serena and Fred become increasingly smug as season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale draws to a close. Despite being in custody, they’re both hopefully planning what their new life, with the stereotypical family unit that they’ve always wanted, will look like.

But later on, with Fred out of the picture, it’s tempting to think that the more recent brand of “what goes around”-type justice will continue, and Serena will also be sent back to Gilead. That certainly wouldn’t go well for her, as she and Fred, despite being vital players in the nation’s formation, were abandoned by and turned against it. But, in typical Handmaid’s Tale fashion, it’s doubtful that things will end up that tidy. After all, Fred’s death was already a huge, long-awaited emotional payoff for fans. And though Serena isn’t a good person, and she’s done plenty of atrocious things, the show has always done a phenomenal job at still managing to make her a three-dimensional, occasionally sympathetic character. All she’s ever wanted is her own family, and she’s been willing to repeatedly take Fred back because of it. Serena even lost her finger in Gilead while Fred didn’t bother to stand up for her and, once again, she’s out of options. Additionally, she’s lost Fred, and is alone with her unborn child in a new country.

But Serena also has a few things going in her favor, as well. For one, she and Mark Tuello seem to have romantic chemistry; whether or not they’ve actually had an affair, he’s been giving clear signals that he has feelings for her. This is especially showcased in the finale during their brief, melancholic conversation outside of the room where Fred is being questioned. And despite the fact that most people outside of Gilead seem to abhor the Waterfords and their past actions, this season also revealed that the couple has a notable amount of Canadian fans. And with any popularity, there’s always more influence in one way or another. Since she and Fred were both cooperating prior to his death, it becomes increasingly clear to see why Serena might very well have a chance at freedom.

The character writing throughout all four seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale has been impressive. And the fact that there’s still a few reasons to feel sorry for Serena, without condoning her actions or morals, is a perfect example of that. But hopefully, if she does go free, things don’t end up going too well for her. After all, there’s something extra insidious about how she’s had more self-awareness regarding her vile actions than Fred, but has always been willing to continue her behavior anyway to get what she wants.
