Why Chris Pratt Makes More Sense Playing Garfield Than Mario

Chris Pratt voicing Garfield makes more sense than his Mario casting, and here is why. After gaining more prominence and even critical acclaim for his role as Andy Dwyer in the sitcom Parks and Recreation, Chris Pratt has appeared in minor roles in movies like Wanted, Jennifer’s Body, The Five-Year Engagement, Delivery Man, and Her. Afterward, he has quickly become a Hollywood household name, starring in the superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy and the animated comedy The Lego Movie, going on to lead the cast of the Jurassic World trilogy.

However, it seems that Pratt is returning to voicing animated characters for his next roles. Recently, he has been cast as the voice of the lasagna-loving cat Garfield in his upcoming film from Sony Pictures. The project marks yet another collaboration between Academy Award-nominated screenwriter David Reynolds and director Mark Dindal, after working together on Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove. Despite the involvement of promising talents, this announcement garnered negative reactions, especially since a month ago, Pratt has already been attached to voice Mario in the 2022 Nintendo film.

Surprisingly, Chris Pratt makes more sense playing Garfield than Mario. Obviously, he is cast in these roles due to his A-list status and prior voice acting experience as Emmet in The Lego Movie franchise and Barley in Pixar’s Onward. But although both characters are unique-sounding, he has a better chance of capturing Garfield’s characteristically grumpy voice than Mario’s mannerisms. After all, the latter’s Italian accent is a significant part of his identity, and Pratt recreating it — no matter how hard he works at it, and sadly, no matter what the result may be — still feels like a miscast. On the other hand, there is a greater possibility then that he can channel his typical high-energy performance into Garfield’s idiosyncrasies.

Moreover, there are speculations that perhaps Chris Pratt will play a Brooklyn Mario, as this would be more obliquely in line with what viewers have already seen of Pratt’s range. The plumber’s Brooklyn origins have been repeatedly mentioned on various Mario media platforms. While that may be the case, potentially altering the character’s voice to suit the voice actor more could easily prove a poor choice for the movie.

Nevertheless, the back-to-back announcement of Chris Pratt’s future movies has stirred controversy, as it does not sit well with the public. Not only does it disrespect and ignore specialized voice actors in favor of Hollywood stars, but the people’s opinion of Pratt has been negative lately, mostly due to his personal and political beliefs. Ultimately, only Chris Pratt’s performances as Garfield and Mario will tell if his casting is worth the backlash they widely received.
