In its first four seasons, ABC’s The Good Doctor experienced plenty of cast turnover, including the death of Nicholas Gonzalez’s Dr. Neil Melendez, who many fans argued was the heart and soul of the medical drama.
Another member of The Good Doctor family who left the series was Chuku Modu, who portrayed surgical resident Jared Kalu in Season 1. Let’s look at who Kalu was, and what led to Modu’s exit from the ABC series.
Who Was Jared Kalu on The Good Doctor?
Introduced in Season 1 alongside Claire Browne as a surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, Kalu was instrumental in helping Freddie Highmore’s Dr. Shaun Murphy to acclimate to his new career. Early in the series, their boss, Dr. Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez), was hard on Shaun because of his ASD, but Kalu came to his colleague’s aid and became one of his few friends at the hospital.
However, things took a turn when Kalu assaulted another doctor at the hospital after he sexually harassed Claire, with whom Kalu was in an on-again, off-again relationship. After the higher-ups found out, Kalu was promptly fired from his position as a surgical resident. He wasn’t down for the count, however, as he sued the hospital for racial discrimination — a case he ended up winning. Kalu would get his position at the hospital back, but he lost the respect of Dr. Melendez and the Chief of Surgery, Dr. Andrews.
Why Chuku Modu Left The Good Doctor
Before Season 2 of The Good Doctor premiered, ABC announced it was going in another direction, and Modu would exit the series. The actor elaborated on his departure in an Instagram post, writing, “Nothing but love love love love love, I’m filled. If only you knew the good vibes and energy that’s in constant motion when the cameras aren’t rolling. Thank you all for teaching me more than you will ever know. Thanks for the love my peoples, on to the next one.”
While Kalu appeared briefly in the show’s second season, he accepted a job in Denver, and left San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Without Kalu around, The Good Doctor brought in a new group of residents, including Will Yun Lee’s Alex Park and Fiona Gubelmann’s Morgan Reznick
After leaving The Good Doctor, Modu became a series regular in the final two seasons of The CW’s The 100. He was also cast in Captain Marvel, in which he portrayed Soh-Larr, a Kree warrior taken by Skrulls in an attempt to lure Starforce to a remote planet and capture Carol Danvers.
Created by David Shore, The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore, Antonio Thomas, Richard Schiff, Paige Spara, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee and Christina Chang. New episodes air Mondays at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC.
