Building off the mediocre success of Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls games gained massive popularity due to their punishing combat mechanics and stellar environmental storytelling, and other FromSoftware games which have been developed since, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, have based their design inspirations heavily on the most successful aspects of these earlier titles.

While there isn’t much known yet about FromSoftware’s next game, Elden Ring, it can be easily assumed that it will contain just as many violent boss fights as their previous entries, if not more. From Ornstein and Smough in Dark Souls to the Soul of Cinder in Dark Souls 3, FromSoftware has clearly discovered some sort of secret recipe for creating boss encounters that are not only engaging and difficult, but entertaining and memorable as well.

FromSoftware utilizes as many different things as possible in order to immerse players in their fictional worlds. Dark Souls’ combat controls make players assign attack or defensive weapons to corresponding triggers relevant to their on-screen character’s left and right hands, and each game contains fantastic music (much of which is from long-time Dark Souls composer Yuka Kitamura, who is also returning for Elden Ring) to give players a sense of importance, danger, and anything else the situation demands. Everything FromSoftware does well comes together in their games’ boss fights, culminating in some of the most iconic video game battles ever.

Everything in the Dark Souls trilogy is designed specifically to tell a story, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the series’s boss fights, from the weapons enemies wield to the locations battles take place in. Like many video games, the bosses in the Dark Souls series are often found waiting in their own specific areas, but the world of Dark Souls is so incredibly steeped in lore that even something as simple as the first game’s first boss location not only contains multiple paths to victory (and sits above yet another boss players won’t encounter until much later) but the design of the boss itself, the Asylum Demon, is a callback to an enemy from Dark Souls’ precursor, Demon’s Souls.

The quality of boss fights in the Dark Souls series has varied slightly over the years but has still been consistently higher than that of almost any other game. The franchise isn’t afraid to change up the established format of what a boss fight can be, with enemies such as The Bed of Chaos in Dark Souls acting as more of a puzzle/platforming encounter than an actual battle, and the Executioner’s Chariot in Dark Souls 2 shifting the gameplay to something temporarily reminiscent of Link’s battle against Goht in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Players are never sure whether or not a boss fight in Dark Souls is going to be mildly difficult or incredibly complex, and that uncertainty is part of what makes them great.

Many bosses in the Dark Souls franchise have multiple forms, while others, like the Deacons of the Deep, are made up of hordes of enemies rather than one centralized attacker. The games are not afraid to rapidly change the way a boss attacks at any given moment, and players facing off against a new Dark Souls boss for the first time are very, very unlikely to take them down unscathed. Because of the very nature of these games, death is but a short delay in trying again, and players must study a boss’ movements and attack patterns closely in order to defeat them. This repetition and research burns a boss’ name, health bar, and attacks into the player’s brain, making them hard to forget afterwards.

From the game’s music to its controls, Dark Souls tries its best to immerse players in its world. The series’ boss fights are incredibly memorable, from the arenas they take place in to the way players have to change up their previously-used strategies in order to defeat them. There may be other games out there that try to do Soulslike combat, but Dark Souls still does boss fights better than anyone.
