Why Dave Bautista Turns Up In Army of Thieves Ending

Dave Bautista’s Army of the Dead character, Scott Ward, appears in the Army of Thieves’ final scene, and here’s why. Directed by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer, Army of Thieves follows the safe-cracking character Ludwig Dieter, as he emerges from the mundane life of a bank teller to participate in international bank robberies. He is recruited by Interpol’s most wanted, Gwendoline Starr (Nathalie Emmanuel) to open renowned locksmith Hans Wagner’s masterpieces, the Ring Cycle safes. Although inexperienced, Dieter agrees to the challenge, seeing it as an opportunity to witness the historic works he has spent his life obsessing over.

While the Army of Thieves fails to explain how the zombie outbreak originated or why there are various stages of contamination, it still serves as a tie-in prequel to the zombie heist film Army of the Dead. Despite the former deviating from a shambler-infested setting, since the outbreak is still in its early days and is contained on the other side of the world, the two still share obvious connections. Army of Thieves focuses on Ludwig Dieter’s first steps in the world of professional safe-cracking, with the backstory of Wagner’s safes in the story’s core. Aside from Ludwig Dieter, Dave Bautista’s character Scott Ward also appears in both films.

In the Army of Thieves’ ending, Dieter is seen living in America and managing Gwendoline’s Safe & Lock Co., years after he successfully opened three out of the four Wagner safes. The film’s final scene then includes cameos from Army of the Dead characters Scott and Maria Cruz (Ana De La Reguera). They visit Dieter to recruit him as the safecracker of their reunited crew, Las Vengeance. The team is tasked to crack the last of Wagner’s safes, the Götterdämmerung, and given Dieter’s reputation, he seems perfect for the role. That scene, which also plays out in Army of the Dead, is an effective way to establish the timeframe of both movies, showing that the end of the prequel lines up with the beginning of Army of the Dead, even overlaps it a bit.

Since Army of Thieves and Army of the Dead drastically differ in genre, Dave Bautista’s character showing up in both films cements the fact the two are part of a shared universe. It is another explicit link between the two stories, relating how Dieter becomes a valuable asset in the Vegas heist. Furthermore, Scott serves as the messenger confirming Götterdämmerung’s location. He gives Dieter a chance to fulfill his dream of someday opening all of Wagner’s safes, which is what the latter promised Gwendoline after they got separated by Interpol. It’s an elegant way to touch upon Dieter’s story first hinted at in Army of the Dead by using it as a coda for Army of Thieves.

Bautista’s shared presence in that Zack Snyder-directed scene also expands the franchise, allowing characters from both films to cross paths and interact in the future. Scott may have been killed by his daughter Kate (Ella Purnell) when he became a zombie himself. However, that does not mean he cannot anymore return and participate in flashback scenes, especially since his character is pivotal to the entire franchise. Additionally, although Dieter seemingly meets his end in Army of the Dead, the film hints at a possible time loop theory, suggesting that the prequel Army of Thieves might not be the last time Dieter and Scott will be seen.
