Why Diablo Fans Will Love Hades

Following an extended early access period, Hades has officially released on PC and Nintendo Switch. It’s a gorgeous rougelike that takes place in the Underworld of Greek mythology. Hades is already a critical and commercial success, and it’s also a game that Diablo fans should love.

In Hades, players control Zagreus, the son of Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Zagreus is trying to escape his father and the Underworld, and make it to Mount Olympus with the help of the Olympian gods. The Olympians grant Zagreus boons during his runs, but if Zagreus dies, then all of those benefits are gone. It makes for challenging gameplay, but fans of other rougelikes, as well as fans of action hack-and-slash adventures, should love it. And that makes it perfect for Diablo players, too.

Diablo has always adhered more to realistic graphics and representations, and it’s one of those games that some people consider a commercial rougelike, while others don’t. No matter where people stand on the Diablo-rougelike debate, Hades should appeal to most fans of the series. However, Hades eschews the graphical stylings of the Diablo franchise for a more hand-drawn video game art design. Although it may be different from the art style many Diablo players are used to, it also sets Hades apart within the rougelike genre. It’s kind of like playing a Diablo game based on an animated Gendry Tartakovsky TV show.

Hades’ Combat & Randomly-Generated Dungeons

Stylistically, the games may be very different. Progression-wise, there are differences as well, because of the rougelike elements that are more pervasive in Hades than in the Diablo games. The combat in Hades is more isometric than ARPGs like Diablo, but the menus and gameplay still feel quite similar. Think of it as a combination of Diablo and games like Torchlight or The Binding of Isaac. For all of Hades differences, it should still appeal to fans of Diablo.

In terms of subject matter, the similarities between Hades and Diablo are pretty obvious. While Hades takes players through the mythological Greek Underworld, Diablo takes players through Hell. This means some areas and enemies have a bit of overlap, although the differing art styles keep them from feeling too similar.

For fans of randomly-generated dungeons and action combat, Hades feels like a more stylistic, animated Diablo in a lot of ways. It should appeal to Diablo fans, even though the rougelike elements in Hades are a bit heavier. It’s a great game worth checking out, and one that will hopefully help tide fans over until the next Diablo game releases.
