Why Doctor Octopus Helps SpiderMan No Way Home Theory Explained

Despite his reputation as one of the wallcrawler’s greatest villains, Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) may find himself on Peter Parker’s side in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Though widely believed to be one of the film’s main antagonists, the character may actually have a different role in the upcoming MCU Phase 4 movie. It’s been confirmed that he’ll fight Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, as seen in the much-discussed bright battle in both trailers for the film, but that doesn’t mean the two can’t become allies by the movie’s end.

Years after sacrificing himself at the end of Spider-Man 2, Molina’s Dr. Otto Octavius will make a second big-screen appearance when he joins the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The release of the first trailer for Peter’s third solo outing in the MCU revealed that Doc Ock’s return will be one of the consequences of a failed spell cast by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). As Strange said in the second trailer, “visitors” from other universes are now converging on Tom Holland’s character. That’s how villains from Sony’s other two Spider-Man franchises will enter the picture in No Way Home. So far, it looks like he’ll be facing off against Doc Ock, Green Goblin, The Lizard, Sandman and Electro—and there has been some speculation about Harry Osborn’s New Goblin appearing as well.

The trailer reveals much more of the villains, particularly Doc Ock, who may have a bigger role in Spider-Man: No Way Home’s story than the others. The film’s second trailer showcased interactioins between Otto and Peter’s high school friends, as well as Doc Ock mistaking Tom Holland’s Spider-Man for his own universe’s hero (played by Tobey Maguire), and at some point it appears that he may have even been captured. Other shots, however, show what looks like Doc Ock fighting fellow Spider-Man villain Electro. All things considered, there’s a chance that Molina’s Doctor Octopus will join forces with Spider-Man against the other four villains. Here’s why that might happen, how it would tie into Spider-Man 2, and how a brief shot in the trailer might set it up.

How Doctor Octopus Is Different In Spider-Man: No Way Home

Why Doctor Octopus Helps SpiderMan No Way Home Theory Explained

Personality-wise, Doc Ock appears to be line with his character in Spider-Man 2, with the only difference in this aspect is that he has seemingly renewed his rivalry with Peter Parker. This is an element of his character that he shares with Lizard and Sandman, whose respective stories didn’t end with them hating Spider-Man. For a reason that remains unclear, all three are back to being at odds with the wall-crawler upon their arrival in the MCU. Another key change made to Doc Ock is his tentacles, which have received an interesting upgrade. The red and gold on his new mechanical arms have been taken by many as an Iron Man connection, but exactly what this means for the character hasn’t been revealed yet. It’s entirely possible that the Stark Tech used to create Spider-Man’s suit could somehow be incorporated into Doc Ock’s tentacles. Either way, it may indicate that Doc Ock will be more dangerous in No Way Home than he was when he clashed with Maguire’s Spider-Man back in 2004.

Doctor Octopus’ Inhibitor Chip Problem From Spider-Man 2 Explained

Why Doctor Octopus Helps SpiderMan No Way Home Theory Explained

The key to understanding Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus is the process he went through to wear the mechanical arms. In the movie, the tentacles are so advanced that they think for themselves, as they are guided by an artificial intelligence. Knowing that there was a risk of them taking full control of his mind, Molina’s Doctor Octopus installed an inhibitor chip that would prevent that from happening. Essentially what it did was block the arms from accessing his “higher brain function”. In other words, the inhibitor chip was the only thing that protected his autonomy. Later on, an accident fried the inhibitor chip without Doc Ock’s knowledge and fused them permanently to his spine. He unknowingly let the mechanical arms dictate his actions and descended further into villainy before eventually realizing that he had fallen under their control.

Spider-Man Can Help Fix Doctor Octopus’ Inhibitor Chip

The inhibitor chip could very well come back into play in No Way Home. It’s been speculated that Peter Parker will repair it for him and free his brain from the tentacles’ influence [via Twitter]. At the 1:58 mark in in the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, the mechanical arms change their design and acquire the red and gold color scheme. Nothing that happened in Spider-Man 2 can explain how they’d do this, but technology that exists in the MCU could make sense of it. A common theory is that Doc Ock will steal Tony Stark’s tech and use it to upgrade his tentacles. Admittedly, an Iron Man link is strongly implied by the arms’ design in No Way Home, but that’s not the only scenario that would explain what’s going on. Alternatively, Spider-Man may use Stark’s tech to save Doc Ock.

It’s important to note that Spider-Man likely still has access to some of Stark’s inventions in No Way Home. After all, he’s wearing the same nanotech suit Stark gave him in Avengers: Infinity War. There may be something in the suit that’s capable of bringing the inhibitor chip back online. If one of Spider-Man’s tentacles can penetrate Doc Ock’s, that may allow Iron Man’s nanotechnology to get into Doc Ock’s body and fix the problem. Even if Spider-Man doesn’t do this intentionally, this could still happen during their fight. Others have argued that what’s really transpiring in this scene is Doc Ock copying Stark’s nanotech. Either way, the result could be the same—what’s inside Spider-Man’s suit may repair the damage done to the inhibitor chip in Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus isn’t by any means the ruthless and evil mastermind that his Marvel Comics counterpart is known to be, so having his senses restored should be enough to end any conflict that he has with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in No Way Home. His comment about Peter fighting “ghosts” is indicative of Doc Ock developing some degree of understanding of what’s going on in the movie. Once he figures out that the multiverse is at stake, he may decide to embark on a path of redemption. If so, he could prove to be a major ally in Spider-Man and Doctor Strange’s fight against the Lizard, Sandman, Electro, Green Goblin, and any other villain the multiverse throws at them. Based on the choices he made in Spider-Man 2 and his last-minute decision to do the right thing, Doctor Octopus having a heroic role in Spider-Man: No Way Home feels like it would be a fitting end to his character’s story.
