Why Elder Scrolls 6 Being Xbox Exclusive Isnt PlayStations Loss

The Elder Scrolls 6 will release exclusively on Xbox and PC, but it’s not necessarily a loss for PlayStation. Since Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2020, it had been speculated that the next Elder Scrolls game would be exclusive to Xbox. Bethesda’s next RPG, Starfield, is also set to be an Xbox-only title, leaving fans of the publisher on PlayStation without access to its future offerings.

As strange as it sounds, though, the loss of Elder Scrolls 6 for PlayStation fans might not be much of a loss at all. Although Skyrim took the world by storm when it launched a decade ago, games have evolved exponentially since 2011. Enormous, in-depth open worlds were a novelty when players got their hands on Skyrim for the first time, but plenty of developers are making comparable fantasy worlds on par or even better than what Bethesda produced 10 years ago.

While it might be disappointing for longtime Bethesda and Elder Scrolls fans who don’t have an Xbox or a great gaming PC, there are substitutes to fill the void that Skyrim’s sequel has now vacated. Further still, with the reputation Bethesda’s garnered over the past few years, with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 being criticized by segments of the series’ fandom, there’s a chance that The Elder Scrolls 6 may also disappoint. PlayStation owners will also still have Skyrim to enjoy, which has only become more replayable with the release of Anniversary Edition, which contains all of the game’s Creation Club mods.

Elder Scrolls 6 Being An Xbox Exclusive Shouldn’t Worry PlayStation

The Elder Scrolls 6 being an Xbox-exclusive also doesn’t detract from PlayStation’s strong first-party lineup. PS5 owners still have God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to look forward to. Even without the other open-world fantasy games coming to PlayStation, though, Bethesda hasn’t had the best track record over the past five years or so. Beginning with Fallout 4 in 2015, which removed silent protagonists from the series, the fan response to Bethesda’s games has become quite divisive. The studio is still capable of crafting the same rich, exciting worlds that captivated players on previous generations, but aspects of the publisher’s RPGs have grown stale, particularly when it comes to their trademark glitches.

This was felt strongest with the release of Fallout 76. Even though Bethesda took steps to fix the multiplayer spin-off, asking fans to give it a second chance and earning back a little bit of goodwill, it’s still difficult to predict how Elder Scrolls 6 will turn out. The glitches in Bethesda’s titles were once considered quirky, but when compared to more polished games in the open-world genre, they begin to lose their charm. It still remains to be seen how The Elder Scrolls 6 will turn out, but for the time being, it doesn’t really feel like PlayStation users will be missing out on that much after all.
