Why Fast & Furious Kept Brian OConner Alive After Paul Walker’s Death

Paul Walker’s Fast & Furious character Brian O’Conner remains a key part of the franchise, kept alive after the actor’s passing. In 2013, Walker was tragically and untimely killed in a car accident in the middle of filming Furious 7. It was a massive shock not just for people involved in The Fast Saga whom he had worked with for years, but also Hollywood in general. Amidst the grieving period, Universal was faced with an impossible decision: how to handle Brian’s involvement in James Wan’s entry into the franchise with the actor gone.

It took a while for the studio to figure out a way to move the project forward after Walker’s accident; production had to be shut down for a while. That’s until it was reported in January 2014 that Furious 7 would keep Brian’s character alive, and that he would be retired at the end of the movie to explain the character’s absence in future films. To further drive the point, Mia, too, would be walking away from Dom’s “la familia” operations to join her husband. There were references to Brian in Fate of the Furious — the first film in the franchise since the actor’s tragedy – and this will continue coming into F9 as it’s already confirmed that Brian remains alive and well in The Fast Saga.

This explanation worked for Fate of the Furious as Mia remained absent, preserving the idea that she’s somewhere with Brian and their family safe and away from the dangerous world that Dom and his crew inhabits. F9 director Justin Lin will have to maintain the idea that the O’Conners are still happily together with Mia joining the team for their new adventure against the estranged Toretto brother, Jakob. Given this, it’s curious why The Fast Saga opted to keep Brian alive in the franchise knowing that Walker, sadly, won’t be able to reprise the role. Despite the complications, the filmmakers opted to give Brian a moving send-off was motivated by how the actor’s death played in real life. Walker’s accident is arguably one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in Hollywood in the last decade as it was so sudden. Universal and everyone involved in Furious 7 thought that the best way to honor him and the beloved character that he played in the franchise was to give him a happy swansong.

It’s also worth noting that there were rumbles that Furious 7 was going to be the final film in The Fast Saga. As the franchise lost its co-lead, it was, understandably, tricky to continue the films without Brian. While Dom has always been its poster boy, its major selling point had been his dynamic with Brian, and how their relationship evolved over the years. A long-time writer of the series, Chris Morgan, said that Furious 7 “could’ve been the end of the franchise.” It doesn’t mean that they’re permanently closing the door on it, but they were willing to walk away from it and only revisit if they have a compelling reason to make another one. But, they figured that it’s best to continue with an eighth film, partially because Walker, apparently, always talked about doing it. So, as a way to honor the late actor’s words, Diesel and Universal decided to continue with Fate of the Furious. Had they stopped at Furious 7, keeping Brian alive wouldn’t have mattered since there are no regular questions with regard to his whereabouts whenever the crew gets back together.

Brian will most likely not appear in F9, but it still needs to explain where he is and why he is opting out of the mission when Mia is coming back. Thus far, it’s uncertain if the character will make another appearance in the Fast & Furious franchise through the same CGI work they did for Furious 7. But, as it is, despite forcing the filmmakers to address his absence in films following Walker’s death, there’s something comforting knowing that the character is alive and well in the movies.
