Why Godzilla Should Have WON His First Fight With Kong

Victory should have belonged to the King of the Monsters in the first fight between Godzilla and King Kong, which ended in Kong’s favor. The fight occurred in the 1962 crossover movie, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and it was the first and only time the two pop culture icons have clashed on the big screen. It won’t happen again until Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong releases in May 2021.

King Kong vs. Godzilla was the third movie for both monsters. At the time, Kong was owned by RKO, who agreed to lend him to Toho for the film, which became the first of many Godzilla movies to adopt a humorous, kid-friendly tone. The film’s story saw King Kong play the hero when Godzilla went on another rampage. The two had three encounters in the movie, with the last fight ending with the two plummeting into the water. When Kong emerged, this was interpreted as a loss for Godzilla, but since he lives in the depths of the ocean, it’s been argued that the result was a draw and that Godzilla simply stayed in the ocean. Years later, Toho laid the debate to rest with a synopsis that labeled Kong the winner.

Godzilla fans were dissatisfied with this outcome – and for good reason; Godzilla should have defeated Kong. Putting aside the fact that Toho had to give Kong a massive size upgrade just so that he could match blows with Godzilla, Toho also gave Kong a strange new ability so that he could claim victory. It was only through Kong’s electrical powers that he was able to gain the edge over Godzilla. Earlier in the fight, it was clear that Godzilla was physically superior; his relentless barrage of punches and tail smacks were keeping Kong on the defensive. Plus, Godzilla’s atomic breath proved to be devastating against Kong, as it badly singed his fur. Kong was outmatched in both close combat and at a distance.

It’s important to point out that Godzilla had already triumphed over Kong prior to the final battle. Kong was beaten and lying on the ground, seemingly unconscious, when a sudden thunderstorm gave him a recharge and provided him with a second wind. A reinvigorated Kong rose up, renewed his battle with Godzilla, and shocked his enemy with his electrical punches. Godzilla appeared to be vulnerable to these attacks, even though he didn’t display a weakness to electricity in Godzilla or Godzilla Raids Again.

This ability is unique to Toho’s King Kong, and doesn’t really fit the character. This weird addition and abrupt turn in the tide came out of nowhere, and that’s why it felt like Godzilla should have been the winner – not Kong. As for why this happened, it’s possible that the explanation is linked to their popularity. Kong was a much bigger icon at the time, even in Japan. He was beloved by audiences, while Godzilla’s reputation was still growing. At this point, Godzilla was new and had only been utilized as a villain. However, this won’t be an issue when Godzilla gets a rematch with Kong in the MonsterVerse. Kong is unlikely to have any wild new powers to help him beat Godzilla this time.
