Why GTA Trilogy Character Fingers Look So Weird

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has only recently been released, but fans are already noticing that some of its characters now have weird fingers. This is just one of the negative impressions of GTA Trilogy from fans that have surfaced leading up to the game’s release, many of which criticize the game’s visuals. Still, the strange appearance of the characters’ fingers can be difficult to ignore.

GTA Trilogy is a compilation of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas. The games have been remastered from their original releases with various enhancements to graphics and gameplay elements. However, in the case of the characters’ hands and fingers, some of these changes have led to less than realistic results.

An example of GTA Trilogy’s weird fingers can be seen in a humorous post by Reddit user Jetsup. In the post, titled “hot dog hands :(“, the character Cesar Vialpando can be seen defensively holding his hands out to protect CJ in a scene from GTA: San Andreas. However, Cesar’s fingers appear jarringly gangly and elongated, to which Jetsup expresses disbelief. This is just one of the memes that mock GTA Trilogy’s new graphics, but it addresses an awkward visual change that is difficult to ignore.

GTA Trilogy’s Characters Previously Had Fused Fingers Instead Of Hot Dog Hands

In the original releases of GTA Trilogy’s compiled games, characters were modeled with hands that had fused fingers. Due to the limitations of the PlayStation 2, many graphical aspects of the characters contained these sorts of compromises. Despite not having spaces between the fingers, however, the characters’ hands still maintained elements of normal proportion and size. Perhaps when modeling the hands in GTA Trilogy, developers utilized 3D finger models based on the originals and added transparent sections between them. Unfortunately, instances such as Cesar’s scene from San Andreas show that this tactic resulted in awkward, unrealistic fingers. A video of these “hot dog hands” can be found below or here.

Beyond just the look of characters’ fingers, players seem to take issue with many of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy character redesigns. Advances in hardware since the original releases of the games have allowed the developers to add more definition to the characters’ physical appearances, yet some fans have expressed their dislike of the remastered designs in GTA Trilogy and their deviations from the familiar models. While the games might be remastered from a technical perspective, these awkward graphical choices and the negative reception from some fans may signal a rocky start for the release of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
