Why GTA Trilogy Characters Look So Weird

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has been unveiled to the public, and some players have expressed that the look of iconic GTA protagonists Carl Johnson, Claude Speed, and Tommy Vercetti feel a little… off. While no one expected the GTA Trilogy’s graphics to be on par with recent Rockstar Games releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5, they likely expected them to look somewhat more realistic than the originals – not less.

This criticism can really only be leveled at GTA Trilogy’s characters. The worlds of Grand Theft Auto’s Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas have been updated with enhanced draw distance, 4K textures, and better lighting effects, creating some truly beautiful scenes (many of which are shown in the GTA Trilogy trailer). Grand Theft Auto’s environments look roughly the same, simply better, but the characters in GTA Trilogy have undergone a different treatment, and some players are likely a big torn on what they prefer.

Claude Speed, Tommy Vercetti, and Carl Johnson definitely don’t look exactly like they used to in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With both Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 Rockstar went in a more grounded, realistic direction, but GTA: San Andreas still contained the earlier games’ cartoonish gameplay and charm.

Why GTA Trilogy’s Graphics Aren’t A Bad Thing

Why GTA Trilogy Characters Look So Weird

By making the character graphics in GTA Trilogy games look more like cartoon-style caricatures and ignoring the “as realistic as possible” approach, Rockstar actually has the potential to give Tommy, Claude, and CJ more character than before. Especially in Grand Theft Auto 3, open world 3D technology was in its infancy, and faces – even those which were specifically designed to look as attractive or realistic as possible – still left a lot to be desired. If someone wants a clue as to the biggest difference between GTA Trilogy’s character models when compared to characters from the original GTA games, the real evidence is in the player’s hands. No one in Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas had fingers. Well, the characters themselves are assumed to have fingers, but all the players see are slightly cupped blocks of flesh with lines drawn on to indicate fingers. The below screenshot of GTA: Vice City – The Definitive Edition clearly shows a Tommy Vercetti with fingers – something that was not possible back when it originally released.

GTA Trilogy Characters Match Game Box Art

The stylistic new art style for GTA Trilogy’s characters also looks similar to the character art found on GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas’ box art and loading screens. Ever since GTA 3 Rockstar has used comic book-style art for Grand Theft Auto video game boxes, and the depictions of GTA Trilogy’s characters are the closest the company has ever come to bringing the box art to life.

The world of Grand Theft Auto is ridiculous, especially in GTA’s 3D era, and this art style suits it much more than if the developers had attempted to make Carl and Tommy and Claude as lifelike as possible. By giving in to a little bit of caricature, these new character models have the ability to display far more expression than the original blocky polygons did. It may look weird, but Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition redesigned character models were the right choice.
