Why Hawkeye Hates Being An Avenger

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Marvel’s Hawkeye confirms that Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) has an incredibly complicated relationship with his Avenger status, especially after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Being an Avenger has cost Hawkeye quite a lot throughout his superhero career, more so than most of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Not only do his duties as a hero often conflict with the other commitments in his life, but he now carries a large amount of guilt from his career as the Ronin between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

The first episode of Marvel’s Hawkeye does a great job showing the public’s love for Clint Barton as an Avenger. While limited in comparison to his arguably more popular allies, it’s clear that Hawkeye still has his fans. Not only does Clint have a role in Rogers: The Musical, but there are also a couple of fans who try to get his attention and want selfies when he and his kids attend a showing. Furthermore, when the Bartons go out for dinner their meal is comped by the restaurant, their way of expressing thanks for Hawkeye saving the city with the Avengers. However, the fame and fans seem to be pretty off-putting for Clint.

Past MCU films have shown that being an Avenger has often gotten in the way of Clint’s time as a husband and father to his family. While it’s evident Hawkeye has never shied away from stepping up to help save the day, that doesn’t mean being an Avenger has always been easy. Despite being “retired” after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Clint still answered Steve Rogers’ call in Captain America: Civil War, telling Wanda Maximoff that he was “disappointing his kids” in doing so (as they were supposed to go water skiing). Likewise, after Clint got his family back after Thanos and the Blip, the reminders from the world of his time as an Avenger in Hawkeye are also reminders of the times he was away from his kids.

The other big reason Clint doesn’t appreciate the fame he’s gained as an Avenger is due to his time as the Ronin. During the five-year Decimation after he thought he’d lost his family forever, Clint went to a dark place where he sought a lethal and merciless form of justice against the world’s criminals, taking on a dark new ninja costume (which Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop has now come to possess). As a result, Clint now carries a lot of guilt from that era, seemingly making him feel as though he no longer deserves to be seen as a genuine hero (let alone Avenger).

Combined with the reveal in Hawkeye that his kids don’t yet know about his time as the Ronin, it makes sense why Clint wouldn’t want to be reminded of the hero he feels he used to be. Not only did being an Avenger pull him away from his family, but he likely feels unworthy of the Avengers status after Ronin. In any case, it’s going to be interesting to see how Clint reconciles his past with the reemergence of his dark costume thanks to Kate Bishop.
