Why Hellraiser 2 Kills Pinhead Super Early

Pinhead may be Hellraiser’s best known character, but he wasn’t quite the big bad in Hellraiser 2, leading to an early death for the horror icon. Pinhead, as played in eight Hellraiser films by Doug Bradley, is one of horror’s most famous villains, sporting as he does a look certain to catch anyone’s eye, and a booming voice that borders on mesmerizing. Yet, it’s easy to forget that Pinhead wasn’t necessarily designed to be the star of what would become the Hellraiser multimedia franchise.

Pinhead is only even in the first Hellraiser film for a matter of minutes, albeit making every second he’s onscreen count. The real villain of Hellraiser is Frank Cotton, who seduces Julia into obtaining victims so he can live again, and then offering up her husband Larry as a replacement skin suit. That said, Pinhead certainly isn’t a hero, and tries his best to take Kirsty back to Hell with him. In Hellbound: Hellraiser 2, we learn more about Pinhead’s backstory, including that he was once a man, and not always Hell’s resident ambassador to torment.

Pinhead’s journey from man to Cenobite is shown briefly in the opening of Hellraiser 2, and expanded on in Hellraiser 3, revealing him to have been an actually fairly decent man named Elliot Spencer that was psychologically damaged by the horrors of World War I. In Hellraiser 2, Pinhead and his fellow Cenobites are defeated shockingly quickly, and a look at his origins helps shed some light as to why.

Hellraiser 2: Why Pinhead Was Defeated So Easily

In Hellraiser 2, Kirsty journeys into Hell itself on the hunt for her father, who she believes is reaching out for help. Along the way, Kirsty runs into Pinhead and friends, who are eager to “play” with her, but are willing to let her explore their labyrinthine infernal domain. Then, with about 20 minutes remaining in the sequel, Kirsty encounters Pinhead again, and presents to him a photograph of his human self. This shocks the Hell Priest, as he had no memory of his former life.

This directly leads into the arrival of Hellraiser 2’s actual villain, Dr. Channard, who had by then been turned into a Cenobite by Hell’s overlord Leviathan. Channard has come for Kirsty and her new friend Tiffany, but Pinhead and company step in to protect her, having seemingly regained their humanity. Unfortunately, this renders them vulnerable, and Channard easily destroys Pinhead’s gang of Cenobites, although not before Pinhead shares a knowing glance with Kirsty. Thankfully, Kirsty and Tiffany do eventually defeat Channard and escape from Hell. Pinhead’s apparent death would have ramifications though, as Hellraiser 3 sees his human and demon sides separated, enabling a fully evil Pinhead to try and bring Hell to Earth.
