Why Jack Killed Armand In Hawkeye (Its Not So Simple)

Warning! SPOILERS for Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2

In the first episode of Disney+’s Hawkeye series, Kate Bishop encounters the freshly dead body of Armand Duquesne III, apparently killed by his nephew Jack Duquesne — but what would Jack have to gain from his uncle’s death? The series, whose first two episodes are streaming now, introduces Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) as a young, enthusiastic archer and longtime fan of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Her mother Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) is getting married to Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton), though Kate distrusts Jack from the get-go.

Sneaking around at her mother’s charity function, Kate overhears Armand, Jack’s uncle and the Bishops’ family friend, arguing with her mother and vaguely threatening her. When her mom is cagey about their conflict, Kate follows Armand to a black market auction hidden away at the event, offering some items scavenged from the wreckage of the Avengers headquarters, including a stolen watch. Jack turns up shortly thereafter, and when the auction is interrupted by the Tracksuit Mafia, Kate dons the Ronin suit and Jack pockets Ronin’s retractable sword. After fleeing the scene, Kate decides to investigate Armand further at his house, where she discovers his body, which has apparently been run through with a sword.

Jack is Kate’s prime suspect in Armand’s murder, and his motivations are likely connected to Eleanor’s disagreement with Armand. When Armand sees Jack at the auction, he tells his nephew, “I’ve reached my breaking point with your fiancée. Things are about to get ugly.” He threatened Eleanor similarly to her face, though she denied whatever had upset him. It seems likely that Eleanor Bishop’s motives in Hawkeye are villainous, though Kate doesn’t seem to realize this yet. If Eleanor and Jack are involved in something unsavory and Armand had been onto them, then it stands to reason both of them could have wanted him dead.

When Kate confronts Jack in episode 2, she brings up the issue of Armand’s inheritance, though Jack would probably not have been in line for a major chunk of the estate, given that Armand tells Kate that Armand had several successors. However, the intense whispered conversation between uncle and nephew at the black market auction did indicate serious tension between them that seems to go beyond Jack’s connection to Eleanor. The bad blood between them could very well have been enough to spur Jack to take action against Armand, whether the inheritance is in play or not.

Without even realizing he’s taken the Ronin’s sword, Kate suspects Jack Duquense, known as the Swordsman in the comics, because of his massive collection of swords and modesty about his fencing expertise. Jack also offers Kate a monogrammed caramel, which Kate saw in Armand’s house before discovering his body. However, these two glaringly obvious clues are likely red herrings to distract Kate from the fact that Jack may have been involved, but it was at Eleanor’s behest — or perhaps Eleanor murdered Armand herself. Assuming Armand’s inheritance was not the goal, both Eleanor and Jack have strong motives to silence Armand and easy access to Jack’s collection of potential murder weapons.

While Kate works to unravel the mystery, it is likely that she will discover secrets about both Jack and her mother. Whatever business they are wrapped up in, the truth about them is sure to shock Kate and make clear the details of Armand’s murder. As episode 2 of the Hawkeye series ended with Kate and Clint in the Tracksuit Mafia’s clutches, perhaps these threads will merge and reveal Eleanor and Jack to be behind it all.
