Why Jaws The Revenge Has Different Endings On TV & Home Video Versions

Here’s why Jaws: The Revenge has two different endings for its TV airings and home video releases. The original Jaws not only made Steven Spielberg’s career, but it was also the first true summer blockbuster. It was such a landmark success it even spawned a franchise, which was a rarity for that era. 1978’s Jaws 2 was an early slasher, but it’s still relatively well-regarded among horror fans. The same can’t be said for 1983’s Jaws 3D, which paired a dull story with some atrocious special effects.

Jaws: The Revenge is commonly considered the nadir of the series, and was greenlit under odd circumstances. Universal was coming through a period of underperforming projects, so then CEO Sid Sheinberg pressed ahead on a fourth Jaws movie in search of a sure hit – which was given only nine months from greenlight to release date. This almighty rush is reflected in the movie, which is something of a mess in terms of story. The sequel, for better or worse, also attempted to give its shark more of a supernatural edge, which includes having the creature roar and understand the concept of vengeance. The movie was a profound disappointment to critics and audiences, though it turned a modest profit.

Nowadays, Jaws: The Revenge is commonly considered one of the worst sequels ever produced – though it has attracted something of a cult. Devotees of the series may have noticed something curious between its home release versions and TV airings, however. In the sequel’s original theatrical version, scientist Jake (Mario Van Peebles) is eaten by the shark after force-feeding it an electrical device. The Brody clan – mother Ellen and son Mike – then shock it to the surface and impale the beast on the boat’s broken bowsprit. It rips the boat to pieces as it dies, forcing Ellen, Mike and Michael Caine’s pilot Hoagie into the water.

If that ending doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because it now only tends to appear on TV airings. This Jaws: The Revenge finale wasn’t well-received following the movie’s release in the U.S., especially as viewers had grown to like Jake. Universal thus ordered hasty reshoots for foreign releases, and in the alternate finale, the shark suddenly explodes when pierced with the bowsprit – with the footage of its exploded body sinking being recycled from the original Jaws – while Jake is suddenly discovered alive but wounded in the aftermath.

This version of Jaws: The Revenge is the one that made it to all subsequent home releases. There are other subtle changes between the two, including a little more gore in Jake’s attack in the original ending or extended shots of the shark stalking the boat. For some reason, the original theatrical ending doesn’t appear as an extra on Blu-ray or DVD versions, though it’s easy to find on YouTube now.
