Why Khorne Is a Great First Campaign for Total War Warhammer III Beginners

The latest entry in the Total War: Warhammer franchise has a dedicated prologue campaign designed to introduce newer players to the core mechanics and new Factions the game offers. Playing as the Kislev, it might seem logical that this would be the obvious choice for uncertain commanders taking on the main campaign for the first time.

First, they are spread over a large area and surrounded by enemies on most sides, almost all of whom can cause severe damage in the early game. Equally, Kislev’s best units don’t become available for a while, despite most of their unit roster being relatively forgiving for those less familiar with battlefield tactics. That’s where the followers of Khorne, one of the game’s most significant Chaos Gods, step in, offering a vast range of benefits and units that should make them the obvious choice for newer players.

Skarbrand, the Exiled Is An Absolute Powerhouse

Skarbrand, the Exiled, is the legendary Lord who leads the Exiles of Khorne playable faction in Warhammer III. He is an Exalted Bloodthirster who, from the early game through to the end, remains the most potent individual melee character available to any race. Although armored himself, it is Skarbrand’s combination of Armor-Piercing blows, Flaming Attacks and ability to cause terror which allow him to tear through even the most elite of enemy units with relative ease.

Beyond that, handy Lord effects include +35% movement range on the campaign map after winning a battle (which should happen a lot at lower difficulties with the Exiles of Khorne), as well as -35% to recruitment costs in enemy or razed territory. Despite his lack of mount or ability to fly, due to damaged sustained in a great fall from the sky, there is still more than enough to permanently defeat the most challenging foes the game has to offer.

Khorne’s Selection of Units Is Strong Across The Board

While most of the game’s other factions have a stand-out area where their units excel, Khorne is uniquely varied in its ability to put out excellent units from across the game’s various types. Although their artillery is where the faction is weakest, this is more than made up for with strong Cavalry, Monsters and War Beasts. Skullcrushers of Khorne are exceptionally high-impact shock cavalry who only improve with the leadership bonus gained from Skarbrand’s presence. At the same time, Chaos Warhounds and Flesh Hounds are guaranteed to cause chaos in the enemy’s ranks.

It is within Khorne’s melee infantry that their true strength lies, with the Exalted Bloodletters of Khorne arguably the strongest of their type in the entire game. The Chaos warriors available act as an excellent way to flesh out deployed forces and the non-Exalted version of the Bloodletters are a great early-game option, available from the very start of the campaign. Add this to the Monstrous Infantry available, including Minotaurs and Spawn of Khorne and potential army configurations are genuinely overpowered.

Khorne is the most consistent faction across the board, making them an excellent option for players looking to take their first steps into the game’s brilliant main campaign. The mechanics of available units, particularly during the early game, are relatively easy to pick up for those getting to grips with the central systems of Warhammer III. The Legendary Lord on offer is also more than useful for getting out of trouble when battles are not going as expected and the starting position is not too challenging to maintain early on. Khorne may not be the choice the developer recommends, but there is more than enough there to get through those first uncertain forays into the Chaos Realms.
