Why King Caesars Species May Already Exist In The MonsterVerse

It’s possible that because of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King Caesar’s species could already exist in the MonsterVerse. Apart from all the creatures that appeared during the sequel, 11 more Titans were confirmed, but weren’t shown onscreen. One of them is a creature is called Sekhmet, who was being monitored at a Monarch outpost in Egypt.

Details about Sekhmet have drawn comparisons to King Caesar, a fan-favorite kaiju from Toho’s library of Godzilla monsters. The monster, who has appeared in two movies, is best remembered for teaming up with the King of the Monsters to defeat Godzilla’s robotic counterpart in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Now, King Caesar’s name often comes up in discussions about which Toho properties should join the MonsterVerse next. Many are hoping he’s one of the undiscovered Titans of the MonsterVerse that could emerge in either Kong 2 or Godzilla 3.

The MonsterVerse hasn’t offered any teases about King Caesar himself, but his species could have a presence in its world via Sekhmet. In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is a goddess often depicted as a lioness. Godzilla 2 director Mike Dougherty has confirmed the connection between the monster and the goddess by remarking on Instagram she resembles a lioness or Sphinx. This characteristic is right in line with what viewers would expect from a MonsterVerse adaptation of King Caesar, who was based on the Shisa, mythical creatures from Japanese culture that borrow elements from dogs and lions.

A MonsterVerse version of King Caesar could very well look like a lion, but that’s not where the similarities between him and Sekhmet end. The kaiju, who is the ancient guardian of Okinawa, can be summoned with a sacred song to defend his people. That’s not that different to the image that Sekhmet has as a guardian deity of Egypt. Since the MonsterVerse’s Titan Sekhmet shares her name with such a righteous being, it could be that she’s one of the MonsterVerse’s benevolent Titans. And she may not be alone either – other members of her species may share similar roles.

If Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Sekhmet has a relative in the MonsterVerse, this Titan could stand revealed as King Caesar. If so, it may be that he lives deeper underground, possibly somewhere in Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth world as one of its guardians. Regardless of whether or not he’s connected to Sehkmet, it would make sense to use this backstory for the creature. After all, King Caesar appears to be a favorite choice for Kong’s next MonsterVerse movie. Given his royal status and god-like reputation, King Caesar could be introduced as the real king of the Hollow Earth and a Titan who may take issue with Kong’s arrival. If Kong 2 happens, King Caesar could fight the ape, and then join forces with him against a greater threat.
