Why Kylo Ren Couldn’t Use Force Lightning When Rey Could

Kylo Ren is one of the primary antagonists of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and a powerful dark side user, but he notably couldn’t use Force lightning while Rey, a Jedi who rejected the dark side, could. Throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren is shown to be incredibly powerful and skilled in combat, idolizing his grandfather Darth Vader and seeking to follow in his footsteps, despite being a Knight of Ren and not a Sith. As revealed in Rise of Skywalker, Rey is also the grandchild of a legendary Sith, in her case Darth Sidious, AKA Emperor Palpatine. Despite her allegiance to the Force, Rey accidentally conjures Force lightning during the film, a power that Kylo was never shown using.

The Force is the fundamental energy that exists in all life in the Star Wars franchise. Force-users, especially Jedi, who are in harmony with themselves, nature, and the beings of the galaxy, can use the Force for incredible physical feats and abilities that function like superpowers. The Force has a dark side, however, which intrinsically creates imbalance and turns its users into malicious perversions of themselves. A famous example of an unnatural dark side power is Force lightning, in which a user casts lethal bolts of dark side-fueled electricity to torture and kill victims. Lighting was the signature power of Darth Sidious, but other users included Count Dooku, Mother Talzin and Snoke.

A notable scene in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker shows Rey attempting to stop a First Order troop transport (which she mistakenly believes is carrying a captive Chewbacca) from leaving Pasaana. Kylo Ren and Rey simultaneously pulled the transport towards them with the Force, agitating Rey enough to accidentally destroy the ship with a blast of Force lightning. Ren, who completed his training as a dark side user by this point, had never been shown using the power throughout the sequel trilogy. There are two possible reasons for this; Kylo was never taught the skill or he simply chose not to use it. Rey, on the other hand, struggled with the temptation of the dark side at that moment and was fighting a connection to her grandfather, unbeknownst to her.

Although Ren was well-trained by Snoke, he hadn’t learned all of his master’s abilities by the time he killed the Supreme Leader. Kylo demonstrably couldn’t defeat Snoke directly, instead killing his master via deception. Kylo most likely never learned how to conjure Force lightning, which is considered an advanced skill for dark side users. Another possibility is that Kylo knew how to use the power to some degree, but chose not to as a means of emulating Darth Vader, who couldn’t lightning either as it would damage his suit’s cybernetics and life-support systems. Given Kylo’s attempts to distance himself from Vader and the Sith between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, however, this is likely not the case.

For Rey, accidentally using an advanced dark side power while following the path of the Jedi is perplexing, but there is a possible explanation. While all three trilogies of the Star Wars saga establish that bloodlines don’t determine one’s destiny, Rey’s Palpatine heritage might have left her with an inherited predisposition to Sidious’s signature power. Adding to this, Rey was struggling with her connection to her grandfather throughout the sequel (even before discovering her heritage). While Kylo Ren couldn’t use Force lightning in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (whether by choice or lack of training), it was most likely Rey’s Palpatine ancestry dark ancestry that allowed her to conjure it.
